Replacing 915 output flange seals. Tool?
 

Just a quick question. I'm replacing the output shaft seals on a 915 transmission (85 Carrera). I don't have a Porsche tool to press the seal in. Is there a way to do this without the actual Porsche seal tool?

If the trans is in the car, I've always used one of the aluminum discs that come in a wheel bearing/bearing race install kit. I smear a light film of white lithium grease around the OD of the seal, and tap it in. It's tricky because if the trans is apart you can make sure that the seal is perpendicular by looking at the inside; but with the trans assembled you almost have to guess. Obviously, if you use this method, put the flat side of the race installation disc against the seal.

Thanks, Peter. The transmission is in the car. I did see that at harbor freight the other day. I'll have to see if they still have the set here in stock.

I thought I remember reading somewhere (can't find it now) that the output flange itself can be used to press in the new seals. I don't have the flanges with me right now so I can't test if this will work.

I'm thinking is that the flange will not travel in far enough to fully press in the seal, but perhaps this is a good option to get the seal started since it will be square, and then use the HF seal presses Peter shows to press it in the rest of the way?
