964 running gear into split screen bus
 

Hi All

I am new to this forum and live in the UK. 4 years ago a purchased a 1966 splitty with no running gear and had the great idea to dump a 911 lump into it. I was lucky enough to find P911GUY (Paul) on this forum and 2 months later he had shipped over a 1966 2.0L engine and 501 box. The thing is that it seems that the 911 engine thing is being done quite a lot so i thought 'if you are going to be a bear, be a grizzly' and so the idea of an AWD splitty was born.

So the question i guess is how much of the 964 transmission do i need ? I get that i need the g64 box, front trans, drive shafts, torque tube and gear shift BUT is there any computer stuff that is involved or are the early systems all relatively simple?

WOW – 4WD in a ’66! I suspect you will also need to transfer the pan of the chassis.

better do some serious measuring. the 964 hub to hub distance is way too wide for the bus body.

yep it definitely is. The idea will be to run 944t trailing arms and hubs and join this assembly to the G64 gear box using some bespoke drive shafts. Its the front end that worries the bejesus out of me!!

the last one i did, i used the complete rear torsion tube in place of the bus tube. then the arms and trans hang from that. '68 and earlier 911/912 has the same torsion center to axle shaft center measurement as the bus. '69-'89 is about 2.5" longer and the tube needs to be forward from the bus tube position by that amount to have the engine clear the engine lid. stick with 2WD and you might get to drive it sometime in your life.

How did they do it on the Syncros?

a guy on The Samba took a splittie and just grafter the body on top of a C303 Volvo military vehicle

I've seen other , more sports car like, things done like that

just looking at dimensions and the 993 rear track is 1444mm and the 944t (a known fit for the rear of the bus) is 1451mm. This makes me think this may be an option with some fabrication.

The syncro system is quite agricultural and it would make the van sit quite high. Im not sure how the vw trans would handle a 911 lump? Twist, grind and crumble me thinks.
