Just finished the installation of a racing elephant cooler

Hi,

Just want to share how was the procedure of the installation.

The job took me 7-8 hour (I'm a basic handy diy). the cooler fits like a glove and overall all the parts where plug-n-play.

2 modifications need to be done:

1. relocation of the horns. I did it very simple. just took the original brackets, straighten them and install the opposite way. fits great and no need to spend money on bracket.

2. there is a bracket on the headlight that hits the bracket on the cooler. you need to cut the bracket on the headlight.

The only thing that is very annoying is to find the spot to drill the upper bracket in the headlight. In the end I did it by making a mark with a screw that was attached to the cooler bracket. hit the bracket on the headlight until the screw left a mark on the hl. then I drilled it. did well.

Two things that I not sure that I did fine are (no info on the instructions):
1. how to connect the oil hoses that came with the cooler. which to where?!
2. the fan has 2 wires, blue and black. which wire is the + to the battery. not written in the instructions.

here some pics:

after:

Now I need to add some oil and take it for a test drive...I'll let you know how it goes....

Yaron

Is that exposed rad down low....there is a second protective piece that wraps under the rad and the rubber pads that affix to the welded in support. I made one rather than buying it but it protects the lower portion of the radiator body.
Did you install a fan too?

Yes. Did the fan too.
Just returned from a test drive. Need to add 1.5 liter of oil.
Something weird happened to me. While driving my steering wheel start moving up and down. Something got loosen. Took the car home. What could it be?

The hoses only fit one way- the easiest way. It doesn't really matter about which hose goes where. Oil goes in one fitting and out the other. The cooler doesn't care which way you put the oil in/out.

The fan wiring is easy too. Hook up the wires and see if the fan blows the right way. Fan should blow air from front to back. If it blows back to front, reverse the wires.

Your steering wheel wobble is a possibly a plastic sleeve in the steering shaft bearing that has crumbled apart. Check the bolts on the steering tube under the dash. They could be loose too.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your help. Where are the bolts of the steering wheel located? Try to look under the dash and couldnt find it.

Thanks
Yaron

The steering column/tube bolts are actually shear bolts. That means you tighten them down and the head twists off, leaving a smooth head. You should actually see only one bolt head (smooth) on the underside of the dash. The other two bolts are actually behind the tachometer.

The simple test for the bolts being loose is shake the steering wheel up & down. If the turn signal stalk and wiper stalk move with the steering wheel, the bolts are loose. If not, its the steering shaft bearing crumble. My guess is steering shaft bearing.

Make sure you use the rubber feet under the cooler. I'm thinking vibration may have been the reason mine leaked at the support weld.

On my elephant kit (just finished it this week), the black wire is positive and the blue wire is ground.

You want it to be a pusher, so check polarity by connecting it to the battery both ways.
