Belated intro -- new to me 84

Hi All,
I'm a long time 914 owner (rwilner on 914world and club) and a new carrera owner. My wife and I recently had a son and I needed a back seat so we could all go for rides together! So, I sold the 914 (well, sale is pending) and picked up a carrera local to me -- an 84 sunroof coupe with ~ 62k miles on it, slate blue metallic with navy full leather interior.

Here's the 914, soon to be in the hands of another enthusiast:

Here's my new-to-me carrera:

It needs a refresh of the shift linkage (bushings, etc) and a dash pad (don't all the full leather cars by now?). So far, my only mod was to put in a radio...it was fun sorting out the previous wiring (mis)adventures. And oh yeah, I drove it 700 miles last week!!

I already have my first care package ordered from our host -- factory short shift, seine gate shift, shift bushings, clutch cable, helper spring, trans fluid, umomo hub so I can fit my mod 7, plus I got some coupler whisperer bushings and new floor mats. I of course have wayne's book and the bentley manual. I'll also be putting in a gps, amp, speakers and a sub since this is going to be my DD as well as my occasional track toy. Over the winter -- the plan is SSIs and a steve wong chip. Some day -- a griffiths AC and maybe some elephant racing stuff.

Can't wait to dig into this car!
Rich

Congrats. Love the color combo. I might be a little biased though. I have your car's twin.

You might consider re-thinking the factory short shift. I had one, and didn't care for it. Then I installed a Rennshift, and it's GREAT! YMMV.

Enjoy the car!! (And welcome to the 1984 club!)

When you get ready for a chip, just send your Motronics to Steve Wong and let him install it: your '84 most likely has a soldered in chip.

Yep, it is -- I have checked it out already. thanks for the tip, I can do the solder work, I have the setup for it (EE background).

thanks for the kind words all. Been making judicious use of the search feature and I hope to be able to contribute a thing or two.

Save your money and get the Rennshifter. RennShift Performance Shifter, 911 or 914TS

I had a rennshift in my 914 because there was no factory short shift option. It was a great unit but I've always used the factory options when they were available.

Perhaps I"ll rethink this...the rennshift is about 10x easier to install too and more easily reversible.

I had tried several and it truly did transform the shifting but I got the u-joint too so that may have helped too. Cool looking car by the way.

My car had the factory short shift in it when I bought it. It seems fine to me.

Love the color, BTW!

+1 on the factory short shift, plus a Stomski shift coupler.

I've had both. The Rennshift is a better unit...without question.

It looks like the 911 came to a good home. I'm sure you will work your magic with it too! It looks beautiful..
