Wine Red Metallic Touchup Paint
I've got an '81 SC in Wine Red metallic paint code L895 that has some pits that need to be touched up. I have one big quarter size spot that I need to get for sure, the rest are fairly minor. It has original paint on it and its showing its age but its not time for a repaint yet...
So my question is where is the best place to get paint? Paintscratch.com or Dr. Colorchip? Or should I just go to a local paint store and get a pint mixed? I don't think they'll sell me less than that and I really don't need quite that much paint. |

I've used Automotivetouchup.com Touch Up Paint, Aerosol Spray Paint and Touchup Paint Accessories | AutomotiveTouchup | 888-710-5192 with good success.

My 79 SC is Sienna Metallic/Diamond Sahara Metallic 436-9-3, which may be the color you are referring to (check my garage pictures). I bought a kit from Dr. Colorchip and was very pleased with the result. I spent more than 9 hours, and filled in a huge number of small nicks and some dime-sized spots as well. It doesn't look perfect from close up, but it went from a 10-footer to a 5-footer, and I'm a lot less worried about rust creeping in.
Work carefully and use a good light and I think you'll see a lot of improvement.

Not knocking the online vendors at all, but if you think it's going to be a tough match you might want to look locally. Check with a couple of bodyshops in your area. They can point you to a reputable local vendor. Most if not all the paint suppliers will have a tool that can 'read' and help match the paint. For any given year and paint code there will be slight variations. Having a local expert see you car can help nail down exactly what mix you need. The other thing is if you get a bad match it should be easier to correct locally. -J

Dr. Colorchip unless you are going to repaint. Their system works really well.

Thanks for the input guys. The paint is far from perfect and the car has a lot of miles, but I've got to do something to keep the rust at bay.
For those who have used Dr. Colorchip, is the paint watery? Thinned down? I've heard some reports of that. Whatever the case, the results look good. |
