Chris, do you mind sharing your formula for the polished finish prior to anodizing? It looks like you really hit the right balance between not too dull, and not too shiny. As usual you make it look easy, but I know you take care, and time, with every step, and it shows in your results.

I've been playing around with different finishes prior to clear coating (assuming anodizing affects the finish in the same way, as in, not much?)

My problem is I can polish the surface to a mirror-like shine, but then it's too... shiny. I prefer the sheen I get from scuffing the surface after polishing with a scotch-brite pad.

But...

A red pad is too coarse, a white pad is too fine, and a grey pad is just right, in terms of sheen, a nice medium shine that matches the weathered bright dip anodizing of my window frames. The only issue is the amount of scratching inherent to the scotch-brite. Even though the clear hides the appearance of the scratches somewhat, to my eye it still looks a bit unfinished.

Anyway, nice work, as usual. Looking forward to seeing more pics of the car!

They were a pretty high polish prior to anodizing, then just clear anodize. I wish I could be more specific. I blasted the inserts with glass bead media after polishing.

On a much more exciting note....the motor is DONE!!!

Levon Pentecost, my engine builder, has been amazing through this process! We had some hurdles along the way but it was worth it. I can go into some of the more nitty gritty details later.

My initial requests were to build a reliable turbo charged motor, that doesnt leak oil, can be driven daily without issues and fits under a stock decklid.

cnielsen 04-01-2016 06:24 PM

Most of those requests are reasonable but the last one (fit under a stock decklid) proved to be a challenge. In the end, Levon conquered and the end result is every bit as stunning to look at as it is on the dyno!

591 HP
532 FT/LB of torque

Let me be the first to say... OMG on your power source. Wicked cool. That is going to be so bad-a$$.

How does this define 'cheap' in the threads title cheap longhood project? ;)
You can change the title in Awesome longhood project and that's still an understatement.

I love it, you're doing a great job!

vintagecarlover 04-02-2016 05:47 AM

Chris. How about some more angles of the intercooler? And build details. G50?

Jonny042 04-02-2016 06:19 AM

Your transmission choice is making more sense to me now :)

Nice powerplant!

Yeah, I'll admit this got a bit out of hand. The car was originally built to be a daily commuter and ski car!

I don't think it's possible to change the title name.

cnielsen 04-02-2016 06:54 AM

Yes...G50. That process was described a few pages back in the thread.

The motor was removed from a totaled 965, which has since been rebuilt and living somewhere in Oregon. It was then installed in a 72 chassis where they de-computerized it. Basically installed 78-79 3.3 CIS components with Electromotive single spark ignition. An intercooler was installed that fit under a ducktail...almost. The car had loads of power but was full of glitches. I purchased that car and soon afterward discovered the motor had not be serviced properly. The oil was very low and dirty so I pulled it from the car, stuck it in the corner of the garage and proceeded to put a different motor in the 72 and sell that car.

So then the backdate car keeps progressing... I had intentions of installing a 3.2 but one evening brainstorming with my engine builder, we (he) came up with great idea to build a "one of a kind" turbo motor.

Levon took the motor completely apart, inspected everything and started to make a plan...

The original 965 motor

I'm skipping a lot of the rebuild process as Levon keeps much of that secret. I know we went with Mahle Motorsport 3.4L P&C's, twin plug heads etc.

The original 965 fan and housing wasn't going to work with one of Damon's new red shrouds so we had to backdate the fan, housing and alternator.

Is anyone able to see the pics Chris just posted? Not sure if it's just me.

cnielsen 04-02-2016 04:02 PM

They didn't post for some reason. I'll try again this evening.
