Spark plug threads

Is applying anti-seize on spark plug threads a good idea?

Bob Kontak 11-15-2012 02:19 PM

Sure. Just a smidgeon on the threads.

Copper based is best

zippy_gg 11-15-2012 02:32 PM

Just read somewhere on this forum yesterday that Porsche advised against it as it reduces conductivity thus decreasing the spark.
Personally I never use anti-seize on spark plugs, but it is a matter of personal preference.

I use just a little Permatex Hi-temp copper-based anti-seize. Easy-peasy. Have noticed no ill effects on ignition. But I can see how that might be an issue if you use too much. Then again, copper's a pretty good electrical conductor . . . .

Dude, do you ever leave that poor car alone? :D:D

dan88911 11-15-2012 05:45 PM

Thanks, I was thinking a very little would not hurt.
However, I will follow the bulletin.

Thanks again.

damn, I just did my plugs....guess I'll wait until the next 15K checkup. Dry, indeed.

Laneco 11-16-2012 04:55 AM

I use anti-seize on the threads but a miniscule amount. I've been doing it for many, many years on all the cars, including the 911s.

I GUARANTEE that if you use too much, the plug won't spark. Been there, done that.

I had just read a thread on that issue the day before and a quick search returned this pic posted by a member of this forum. Gotta love it when info is still fresh in your mind!:D

Interesting comment in this month's Panorama Tech section. Guy having trouble getting a plug out and the moderator sez........use a bit of anti seize next time.

zippy_gg 11-16-2012 10:53 AM

If you ask 10 people you will get 10 different opinions.:D
In the end it is what makes you comfortable that matters.;)

Concestor0 11-16-2012 11:49 AM

This is a tech bulletin from NGK regarding anti-sieze. Spoiler alert - they say not to use it.

DRACO A5OG 11-16-2012 02:27 PM

Well ngk is what I use, so I will make it so :P

Tippy 11-16-2012 02:45 PM

You do not use anti-seize due to the plating on the spark plug threads.

I used a dab of copper antisieze last change; 27mpg on the hwy and not a blip to rev limiter. I won't see those suckers again until 180,000 miles but I reckon they'll come out.

The Porsche owners manual also says change the oil every 12,000 (or 15,000) miles and CASIS says shift at 2100rpm. I change (and shift) at 3,000. Lotsa choices. :D
