				2 911s now driving X-country

			Greetings All,

I’m off for another ride around the country in my 911. I met this fellow last November at the Dragon Tail Pelican Meet. I figured this 911 guy couldn’t be all bad if he was hanging out in a campground in 20 deg F mornings eating breakfast. Over the course of the next few days, the relationship built up steam into a Cheech and Chong Show. Over the course of the next few months, we decided to continue the act by driving around the West. At this moment I’m in a restaurant in Texas off I-40 headed for New Mexico to dry out. As soon as we leave here, we’re gonna search around in the Southwest and Northwest for wild horses, golden eagles, bald eagles, and cougar tracks. We’re looking to say hello to fellow Pelicanheads. We DO NOT need a place to stay. We are avoiding stoplights and tourist traps. Local knowledge would be appreciated, as well as 911 maintenance, oil change, etc.help. We’ll be on the road for weeks, possibly months. Until it’s over we’ll try to keep this thread current and entertaining. Brorag brought his laptop and we’ll be getting back as often as we can. Later……….. Brorag here.......... We finally hit the road Sunday morning at 2:30AM. The day started out with Ron busting in the bedroom at 1AM yelling “let’s go!”—scared the crap out of wife……….. We took I-40 to exit 258 in Oklahoma, and crashed at the Fountainhead State Park 18 hours later. Ron wanted to keep going; I pussed out and had to sleep. See pics—note the electric lights provided by Brorag power and light………..needed a generator to power CPAP machine.. I struck my side of camp by daybreak. I was up after Ron hollered “John, you up?” —he goes back to bed…….It looked like rain, and dumped about half way thru the load-up. Ron took his side down in the rain………..Ron, get your ass up, it’s gonna rain!!! “Just ten more minutes” he says…………….. We got soaked, and went for breakfast. I told him to keep his mouth shut and let me do the talking; we were in east Oklahoma and they don’t cotton to Yankees around these parts. We found the “table of universal knowledge” –all the old guys in town were sitting around the back table. I walked in, they took one look, and I said “did you know there’s a pile of drowned frogs in the middle of the road outside?” They said it’d been raining for two weeks—finally broke the drought, and what was I doing bringing a Yankee in there restaurant. So far Ron was being good and had kept his mouth shut and let me do the talking, like we agreed. He blew it when he had to order breakfast. She said “whatchew want with them grits—he thought she asked something else and said something else—she said that’s nice, but don’t Yankees eat breakfast and whatchew want, boy? We drove for 6 hrs in a downpour, then it started clearing. Stopped a for gas, and noticed that part of old route 66 was open as a loop. We agreed we would drive it and continue West at the other end. I took off, got to I-40, looked back, and no Ron. Waited for 20 minutes, gave up and went hunting him. He was in the spot I left him, yacking with locals. “ I didn’t get a chance to leave yet!”. Back on 40, to Amarillo to the big steak house. See pics. While I was waiting for Ron before we went in the Big Texan to get his s—t together, I chatted with this 7ft 260lb bouncer at the door, telling him what to expect. Ron walks up, and I told him to say hello—Ron keeps walking and said “I ain’t say’n s—t to either one of youse fuc—rs” ……….Big guy lost his lower plate laughing……. Ron opened his mouth again inside, dammit. He paid the waitress with a $50 bill and told her he wanted the change back—she looked perplexed, so I told her: • I had signed him out of Long Island for the first time and • he didn’t know there was more to the US west of the Hudson, and that • he was not properly socialized. I apologized – Ron asked what for? This trip is gonna be longer than I figured………. Ron's car John's car todays lunch

Lots of wind in CA at this time of year and this year is not going to be an exception. I'd avoid camping in the desert. It's not cold to youse guys (well, one of you ), but it will be very windy most nights. Seek sheltered areas as you get on the West side of AZ.The beaches should be pleasant enough. Lots of state beaches to camp, but most weekends are sold out. That's right, they sell reservations well in advance. Good that you've got a laptop with you. Here's the link to CA camping: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=737 Of course. SoCal is bittersweet; too much traffic even on the weekends, but lots of folks here that would like to see youse guys. |

Ron, haven't seen any Cougars in my back yard, but a damned 'coon spilled about 1/2 cord of recently stacked wood last night. NOT fun restacking it. So, any rough time planned for Orygun? Weather is beautiful here today. As you know, that can, and does, change...

Wish I could've joined you. But then again, Madaio gets even braver and mouthier when he's got 2 bodyguards. So I'll just enjoy this one vicariously.

Since you guys are taking your time, We have a DE at La Junta, CO on May 19-20 (Pelican Jim & Lu Richards – VA Aborigine ‘73E 2.7RS will be there) Then in Santa Fe on May 24-27 is Fiesta del Porsche. There is lots to see and do in northern NM and southern Colorado. Keep in mind that the higher you are the colder it is. What is rain at lower elevations quickly turns to snow as you go up. We had 6” of snow between Denver and Colorado Springs last night. (I-25 goes up to 6900’ at Monument Hill – not high enough to be considered a pass in Colorado.) The road north out of Santa Fe (US-285) to the Great Sand Dunes NP is wonderful this time of year. Colorado State Parks are empty this time of year. I suppose we could organize a private play-day at the Pueblo track. There are great campsites at Pueblo Reservoir and along the Arkansas River. What internet, cell, text links do you guys have? This forum works great unless you are out of touch. Best, Grady

Coast Hwy 101 through Oregon has eagles, falcons and the occasional whale. Lots of camping all along the way with lots of twisties. Watch your speed through the small towns though. I traveled the western US in a 62 356B Cab in 1982. Post often! Craig Oceanside, OR
