What did I buy?

Made my first Porsche purchase on a whim. Not enough research done on my part, but sometimes you just have to pull the trigger... Right?
1974 Porsche 911 base model
Took it to a porsche garage (mom & pop type) and they said the thing is solid for inspection. I have a feeling a Tech checked the ball joints ect. Has all the right receipts for an engine overhaul 8 years ago (only 5k put on motor since rebuild)

Here is where I could use some nubie help.
-The body doesn't fit the VIN clearly a newer design a 930 or 74 carrera?
- Did I make a good purchase for 10g?
- Can I call this a 1974? the body is 1974. Motor is 1974 2.7. Trans is a 915. Can't find 5th gear... Need to check Serial number on trans tomorrow to see if it has 5th.

I think your good to go, lots of normal upgrades to the car over the years, well worth the 10k you spent IMHO, 2.7 would be the right engine with a 5 speed, it's there, might need a coupler adjustment. 4 speed would be from a 930 turbo. the body looks like some nice SC flares, not a turbo. Wheels are newer of course. looks good, keeper! BTW, can you tell us the vin, engine S/N, trans S/N

My first car was a 74, base model.

I think 4 speed was an option in those years?

Its ALL going to depend on who did the motor rebuild and rust.

Did you check the battery box/front pan and rockers for rust?

2.7 mag case motors have to be rebuilt with some special machining and work. Was this done?

Its probably a decent buy even if there are some issues it looks great. Enjoy!

I could rarely find 5th gear before I put a new shift coupler in + bushings.

Nice car BTW

I think it is possible you have a 4 speed 915, though.

Good score - 1974 is a great year for 911's - They are light and simple.

Nice car. I like the wheels but if you want period looks I'd look for Fuchs. Plus they have a performance advantage that you will appreciate. Helps spin that 2.7 a little faster

Congrats! Very nice looking 911! Looks like someone did some "tasteful" updates/modifications to it. It seems that whoever owned it before was looking to give it the look of a mid to late 80's Carrera. SC rear flares, stone guards, Carrera or early Turbo tail (Can't tell from the view in your pic), front chin spoiler, power "flag" mirrors, black window trim, C2/C4 16" wheels, Euro headlamps, painted calipers. IMO, all nicely done since all the mods were intended to keep it looking stock and original.

$10K seems like a pretty good price taking in consideration of the engine rebuild, and if the rest of the car is solid. Hopefully they've addressed the head studs issue in the rebuild? Any indication of head stud replacement in your receipts? As for the 5th gear, you may in fact have a 4 speed trans. My 1974 has one, and I'm actually planning to change it out with a 5 speed in the future.

BTW, Welcome to the forum! Lots of good people and good advice here!

Like the others stated, if you are rust free, and the engine work was of quality, then that's an amazing price. Car looks clean, please keep us posted on how it goes. Should call you YuppieGambler. Good luck! BTW, more pics... We're a pic-whore bunch.

Back in the day, 4 speed 915 was standard with 5 speed $140 option.

It is a shame that they blacked the trim and put a flag mirror on it, but some people like steak tartar and some like it well done. If the engine is solid turn then the price is right.

At 70 mph my tach is at 3 grand.

The body is great from what I understand. Minimal suface rust around the battery (first thing I checked). Bottom of driver door is looking bad and some bubbles here and there. 10ft car.

You may already know about this, but you can get a Certificate Of Authenticity from Porsche.

Accuracy may not always be 100 percent, but it'll likely provide you with some useful info.

Here's the link:

Certificate of Authenticity - Owner Services - Porsche Service - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

You could also try calling Porsche NA's customer service line and giving them your VIN. You may be able to get what you need over the phone. Good luck!

lots of upgrades it looks like; seats, wheel, dash gauges, etc..

it looks like a PO tried to make it look like a late 80's carerra-looks nice to me.

biggest think I think to look for is rust-check the floors, front pan, suspension points, rocker panels etc..

Good luck

Post the engine number (right side of the fan) looks like the shroud off a 2.4l cis engine.
