1974 911 Heat Tubes
What function do the heat tubes inside the rocker panels perform? I'm debating installing period correct replacements or a high-quality high-temp air duct like the photo below which another user installed. I think I like the alternate using the high-temp air duct unless I would be missing an important function.
I'm sure there are many comments in the forum somewhere on this topic, just can't find them all.

They serve as "mufflers". There should, I believe, be insulation packing around them as well.
I made the mistake of repairing the sills and longitudinals on my '72 and replacing those tube with a solid piece of DOM tubing. Bad idea, take it from me. Running the heat now results in a big increase in interior noise. Not enough to cut them open and redo it, but I really wish I had used the OEM solution.

Makes sense - the originals I pulled out likely contained asbestos. Many thanks
