Hey guys,

To all who went on the "Gettysburg get lost and do 20 U turns" drive today it was awesome!

As a few of you know during the drive my battery light came on but everything seemed fine....

Well thats not the case. While driving back to the hotel my lights kept getting dimmer.
Luckily we made it back fine but once the car was off it would not start again.

I checked all fuses and battery wires. I have a volt meter and jumper cables.

If anyone that know ANYTHING about the charging system in these 911s and would like to help I will gladly pay for your services with lunch, beer or cash.

I have a 150 mile trip home and Im not sure the wife, kid and myself will make it.

Im going to jump the car in the morning and drive to the meet as im less than a mile.

First check should be your fan belt. Make sure that it isn't too loose - otherwise it slips on the pulley and won't turn the alternator.

Your battery could be going bad - not holding the charge. Fingers crossed that it isn't a failing alternator.

Alternator was replaced last year, belt is tight, and battery in brand new.

Well, first you need a 110v battery charger, charge the battery.......

Or borrow or buy a fully charged battery. A fully charged battery is 12.5v+.

Start it, volt meter should read 13.0v +, 2500 rpms, 13.5-14v. OVER 14v...VR and the battery boiled......

If not then your alternator and/VR is kaput.

Who did the alt rebuild? A local shop or a chain store reman? Remans are cheaply done and are prone to early failures.

I bought it from our host and did it myself. Have never had a problem.

Today I was pulling out of a parking lot and gave it the beans as they say. Thats when the light came on. I drove it the rest of the day with no problems. Once I had to turn the lights on it got real low.

Well, if you have tools......or a fellow driver does......you have the experience to pull it. You need to make a decision on a diagnosis in or out the car.

Anyone have a charger with them? Any late nite parts stores that sell furrin' parts or at least a charger and volt meter if no one has one? Does the local PCA have a go to wrench in the area?

Im staying tomorrow night. So if I cant figure it out at the meet then I will hit auto zone and buy a charger or a new battery.

once you get it started just pull off the battery cable. If it quits running then your alt is not functioning

So after a great day at Hershey. I got back to the hotel with a charger and my meter.

My battery reads 12v, after starting the car it reads 11.5v, if I turn on the lights it drops to 11v and very slowly starts to drop.

I have the battery on a charger now. Does anyone have any ideas? Should I order a new alternator? I replaced every fuse in the car...needed to be done anyway.

Does the voltage go up as the RPM's go up? If not, it's your alternator....

Didnt check that. I was alone. I will try in couple hours after a little charge.

Im in the hotel and I feel funny carrying my battery back and forth.

Don't hold by the + & - at the same time....

Let us know what your voltages are when you re-test....

If your car is started and it's showing 11.5 V , your alternator is the problem that should be pushing 13 -14 volts.

I would also test the alternator @ the alternator and at the battery, maybe for some crazy reason your cable to and from is a problem.

How do I test at the Alt?

the alternator should have a positive coming off it, usually the thickest wire is hot and just ground it off one of the mounting bolts (with the meter). might not read much or anything if the alternator is bad.
