It's not a VIN number. It is a number used by Porsche to keep track of the cars during production, before a VIN was issued. Think of it as a production sequence number. Porsche can cross reference it to a VIN, but nobody else has that info.

i believe its called a chassis number, a seach on this site will produce a post that helps you decode it. It confirms a few details of the car. Porsche should have this number in their database and they can seach your vin and verify that the chassis number and engine serial and trans serial number all match, thus confirming if it is a numbers matching car.

I have been researching these production numbers for a few years. The factory originally stamped the VIN in the same location, then changed to the production number in 1969 model year; coincident with the long wheelbase introduction. It is partly code, and partly serial #.
The first digit: 0=replacement body, 1=production body second digit: 0=coupe, 1=Targa, 2=Karmann coupe, 3= Karmann 914/6 third digit: last digit of model year; this cycles 0=1970, 1980 etc last four digits are the serial # For example, 0=coupe could mean the car could be a 911T, 911E, 911S, 911RS or even 912 depending on the year. No differentiation for left or right hand drive, sunroof or anything else really. The factory does have the number in most of the records, but not for 1969 I understand. The factory generally only reveals that the production # and VIN # that you provide them with do match or do not match. They are very security conscious about this #. I have a good list of these numbers, and if you are willing to provide me with the VIN that it matches, it would assist my research. Dave

The vin is also stamped in the trunk next to the smugglers box. Check this number.

Where are you located? I know one fellow that did manage to find the VIN from the production # recently.

the car was bought from the previous owner in the mid 80's from the government auction, at that time the original numbers were deleted and they stamped a new serial # based on the auction and irrelevant with the original VIN, so I am trying based on the production number to find out more about the car if possible.

The 2 in the production # indicates 1972 or possibly 1982. The body style should provide the clue as to which it should be. What are the engine and transmission serial #'s, and what is the paint code?

Given enough photos of the car, we could probably tell you what it is...

the car during the years have been modified to 964 exterior look with 3.2 engine, so not much to tell by photos I even have asked a porsche mechanic for details and except that the car has the long body he couldn't provide any other information, so the only link to the original model of the car is the production #
thank you for you help

There are enough differences in the cars that if you were willing to look a little deeper, and maybe take a few things apart for a better look, you might be able to narrow it down pretty well. It's up to you.
