Two Singers, A 959 and Derek Bell
An amazing night at the HCR PCA Formula 1 event. On display (along with some other nice cars) were two Singers, and a 959 (driven to the event). After dinner, the guest speaker was Derek Bell who gave us a great story of how he came to drive for Porsche.
And for a perfect ending to the night - on my drive home I saw the tell-tale lights of a 911 approaching me from behind, and as it passed it turned out to be the green Singer, followed by the Grey Singer, and then the 959. I wish I had my camera rolling for that. I have more photos of the Singers - let me know if you would like me to post them. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384661955.jpg |

Cool Frank.

Very nice. How were the sounds? Did the Singers sound the same? And how'd the 959's sound rank?
And please, post all the pics you want! Best, Don |
This probably shows my age or ignorance, but what is a "Singer?"

I know the Singer’s are stupid expensive. I have read all of the arguments about how you could build a better performing 911 for less. If I hit the lottery I would have to own one. Of course the problem is I don’t play the lottery and short of raiding my only child’s future educational funds it’s not likely I will ever own one. I would love to see and hear one in the flesh. Many years ago I saw a dozen 959’s in the flesh but didn’t have the chance to hear one being started.
Oh… Once again the 917 at the Simeone Foundation is one of the People’s Choice to be started and ran there on Nov 30th. If you have never been that’s a sort of good day to go if you know what I mean. 1970 Porsche 917 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II 1964 Cobra Daytona Coupe 1963 Corvette Grand Sport Not too shabby a lineup for that day. |
The two Singers sounded aggressive, but a little different from each other, as they were pulling away from me. I suspect this is due, in part, to the different induction systems the two cars used (see photos).
The 959 sounded a little quieter, but this is all difficult to judge as my windows were up and we were on the freeway at the time. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384704786.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384704903.jpg |
If I recall the green one is a G body with Ninemeister motor while the grey one is a 964 with Cosworth build roots (with GT3 intake). Excellent

Nice cars, speaker and pics. My son and I where there last year for the race and made it to the BBQ. Great activity. Patrick Long was there and spoke briefly. There were a few very nice cars but nothing like two Singers and a 959!
Thanks for the report, hope you enjoyed the F1 race as well. |
Dang!! It doesn't get more Porsche perfect than that!
Thanks for sharing! |
Thanks, Frankc very nice. There is an article in the recent issue of Excellence on the Singer.
