hi, sorry i didn't understand if the Californians also cover the holes of the flag mirrors??

thanks

I would say no, the flag mirror holes will not be covered by the small California base. Other than using the Porsche Aero mirrors I would say those holes will need to be filled. As the original poster is painting the car anyway I would simply have them filled at paint time and worry about it once I found my "perfect" mirror..

While you most likely could get them to function correctly mounting a big flat base on a curved door panel won't work well.. and that's IF that mirror head would rotate enough to be 90 degrees to the ground.

Hi Steve,

No they won't (very small bases). Sorry I didn't read the OP's statement (about not wanting to fill the holes) properly.

Cheers - Gary

To my original question - does anyone know (or can find out) whether the 1990s BMW or Miata mirror base covers the holes and sits at approximately the right "angle" to look correct? I posted the dimensions of the Z3 ones as 2-3/8" x 4-1/2" overall and I just don't have access to a flag mirror right now (or car) to compare. Step 1 is whether the oval of the BMW mirror is big enough and step 2 is whether the mirror would sit properly to look "correct". From looking at the shape of the door I would think it would.

Thanks,
Ron

Can somebody please post the measurement of what the flag mirror base is? My new-to-me 85 is being shipped to me on Monday and will take a week to get here, so I'd like to keep working the options. Thanks.

Oh the irony - I've been asking for a week what sized bases (BMW, Miata, etc.) would fit over the holes. Does anyone have a Porsche between 1976 and 1998 at home that they can take a quick measurement of the approximate base area for either a flag or Aero? I know both are almost spot on the same size and we know they cover the holes :-)

Thanks,
Ron

I would measure my new Aeros but ***********:

Tells me "sorry, but now they are $65 more a pair than we advertised" - said fine..
Now tell me "sorry, they are backordered"..

Final Resolution - Ordered an in-stock Power Aero Mirror Kit (everything including motors and mirror glass) from SMC for $612 if you can believe it. Already shipped. Had some offers of used mirrors in the $500 range, but they would have to be taken apart, prepared, painted, and re-assembled.

Ron - Glad you figured it out, who is "SMC" and are they OEM Porsche mirrors or knock-offs? Google finds nada..

Apparently they don't sell the .02 manual version.

Vitaloni Sebring on stock Carrera bases, painted to match.

The passenger side one needs to be the convex version to be useful.

Holy Thread revival, I know.... Sorry Chaps!
What brand are the mirrors that you had and how did you like them? Was the molding rough? Did they match side-to-side?
