84 targa with 3.0 engine

I found a really nice targa in Quebec for sale the only thing is the sellers uncle is a porsche mechanic as I'm told I was going to purchase the car but the seller says the original 3.2 was leaking in many spots so they installed a 3.0 sc engine
Red flags as I know the entire fuel delivery system was new in 84
Had anyone heard of doing this swap I heard the car runing via video it sounds good

Should I run far far away from this
He's asking 17000.

Are you sure it's an 84?? The fog lights are not Carrera. Starting in 84 fog lights were recessed in the valance

It seems very odd to me that they would backdate the engine

If it truly is a Carrera with an SC motor, you will not be able to pass smog, at least not in California.

I'm not sure why they just wouldn't fix the original engine apparently his mechanic advised him that the 3.0 litre engine was stronger Also he does not have the original engine that would have been a bonus

180,000 miles in Sept 2013 which is about 260,000 kms.
Now it has only 164,000 kms (100,000 miles) 5 months later!

Well, there's a few Porsche VIN decoders like this one here:
Scouser's Porsche VIN Decoder

it's interesting; the VIN says it's an '84 ( but as you've pointed out the 3.2 has been replaced with a 3.0 litre engine), the pictures provided show it has an 83' (and older front valance w/fogs) and the steering wheel appears to be from 85' and up and it has a rear Carrera badge ( though these are easily removed & replaced items). Is it true that PO really did in fact replace a 3.2 with a 3.0? Any pics of engine? Is it possible to be a very early production for model year 1984?

I have a feeling this car has had a bad history to it

for me personally I would not think twice about this car do to ALL the red flags

hell for all you know it could be an SC that was reVINed to an 84

I still can't understand the reason for going backwards with the engine and the other thing that bothers me is why would someone choose the uglier SC valance over a stock Carrera one

someone earlier posted that maybe it was an early production 84....my 84 was born 9/83 and according to the vin you posted it was produced after mine

Here's yet another anomaly - it looks to me like it has H5 lights in it, which were first available in '86. Add those to the rest, and it makes me think "Franken-porsche". Who knows what you might find underneath.
