Replace '72 oil filler door assembly??
I am buying a '72 that was "modernized" at some point in its life, and will be putting it back to how it is supposed to look. I am not trying to do a concours job or anything, mainly putting the long hood and correct front fenders back on, but while I am doing a full glass-out repaint, thought it may be worth putting the oil filler door back on...
The oil filler wont actually WORK from that door (has a 3.0 in it) but I wanted your opinons on if it is worth going through the extra expense to make it look right and BE there at least! I suppose the easiest way to do it is to find that section of a '72 fender and weld it in, with the door (I put up a WTB ad in the hopes someone has that??) but that seems like a rather obscure part to find. What do you guys think? since the car is FAR from original and wont be put back to full original (or likely even painted the original color) is it even worth doing that at all??? I kind of figure that I may as well before spending money on a full repaint and wishing I had later, but then again it won't actually DO anything but be there Last edited by IslandHopper; 03-30-2014 at 12:55 AM.. |

Maybe someone like Jim at EASY would have one. The correct filler door was unobtainable 10 yrs ago when I had my '72s. I can't imagine it would be any easier to find one today

I suppose the question is IF I can find what I am looking for... In your opinions do you think it's worth the added trouble to put it there if it isn't going to be functional?

Well, to those who worship originality it's a must-have. To my mind if it isn't functional it's just a useless hole (like a little sunroof) in an otherwise smooth body. My own '72 has a front mounted oil tank and the original oil door is gone.

Actually I've seen replacement sections & doors in the FS section over the past year or so. But I'm also assuming you need the tank, console, hoses, etc., etc. That will all add up to a large chunk of $. If you can find everything, you could buy it & either install all of it or keep it with the car in case you ever sell it & want to include the original equipment. I think I actually have a filler door somewhere.
