Dead Porsche needs help!

Hi folks , got a battery warning light and car eventually died. Barely got home. I jump started it and the voltage at the battery end across the wires going to battery is 11.92 volts.

Is a new alternator needed or can it be refurbished? Is this a voltage regulator issue?

Are there any other possible causes?

Thanks a lot

If its running and you got only 11.92, your alternator is not putting out as it should be around 13.8 Volts.

First thing is, what years is the car?

dead porsche

Sorry lads - car is an 83 SC. I have checked that the fan and pulley are seated properly also and all seems well there.

Also, have had the battery checked out and although it is now low, it is a good battery.

Thanks a lot for the help

Extra info

Also, I should add that when I accelerate or keep the revs up it put the battery light out for a while, then it returned.

put a charge on the battery and see it it will hold the charge.

With the car running your should get 13.5+ voltage. If it is anything under 12.5 you have an alternator problem.

How was the battery tested?

charging

Thanks - i connected jump leads and charged battery a bit from another car. Then fired up 911. Started first time, but when I then disconnected jump leads, battery light came on and voltage across battery cables reads 11.92v.

That sounds like charging issue. I had a Carrera that had an issue charging because the dash light was bad. Something about the alternator needing a signal to tell it to charge? Also, make sure all of your grounds are good.

Alt light is working normally as it turns on.
First have the battery tested for failure.
If good, then the alternator is the suspect.

To answer your question, yes, they can be rebuilt if you have a shop around your area that still does that type of work. Seems it's a dying art, rebuilding alternators, starters and generators.

Edit - Hmmm: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/789346-fs-slightly-used-voltage-regulator.html

Put the battery under charged over-night. Check the battery voltage and try it again. Take another voltage reading with the engine at idle. See what you got.

Curious if you experienced any strange behavior with your tachometer? My alternator went in my '83 SC and the tach was acting very strangely - the needle was bouncing erratically. Tried to get it rebuilt and was told it was not rebuildable - cannot recall why. Replaced the alternator and have not had a problem since.

Thanks - just wondering is there any way an earth issue would give me a low reading on battery?

Also I can see an alternator for sale for a 911 Turbo . It's a Lucas . Will that work on an sc if the year is the same ?

Thanks

More then likely not.

Once you determine what is wrong, here are the parts for an 83.

Voltage Regulator:

New alternator (cheaper than the Bosh rebuild):

Rebuild alternator (with core charge):
