1974 2.7 engine temps timing issues
Earlier I emailed this to a few contacts but was hoping everyone here could read it and help because I'm a little stuck.
Hello, I have a 2.7 motor that the previous owner had "hot rodded" when he rebuilt it a few years ago. The car then sat incomplete until I purchased it a few weeks ago. I have just the stock intetnal oil cooler and on 80°+ days the engine is getting extremely hot from all the information I have seen. Temps are climbing past 250° and refuse to cool down even on very soft laps around the streets. The other oddity that I am seeing is the timing at those temps at idle is moving from 5°btdc when just warm (180°) to 8°btdc. I did time the car at 6000 rpm with the vacuum retard to the dist unhooked and was at 38°atdc which seems perfect from other users on the forums. I do plan on purchasing a front Fender oil cooler kit from you guys but at the moment I feel like the car is unsafe to drive and was wondering what if any advice you could pass on. The tachometer also becomes erratic as the engine surpases about 220°. With a voltage meter hooked up above that temp I still was reading a max of 14.6v which again from what I've read from users means that voltage regulator is doing its job. Again, any and all suggestions would help tremendously. |
