Worn steering rack?

How can I tell if the steering rack is worn? Front end feels like it is all over the road (1985 911).

Doubt it's your rack. Check your tie rods and ends. Also your ball joints and wheel bearings.
A bad alignment will also cause the front end to wander.
Tires and pressures good?

Thanks for the reply. Plan is to change all components you mentioned, and level the rack -- have terrible bump steer. Front end was aligned (supposedly), but still feels loose and dives right on bumps. Changed to turbo tie rod on left side, could not break right tie rod loose from rack. Eyelet bolt head is facing body so cannot remove. Was going to pull the rack to install turbo on right and level.

turbo tie rods are a good upgrade. so are ball joints and they are not hard to remove. the steering rack is really easy to re-build. I did mine in less than an hour once it was out of the car (really it is a cake walk) just use good grease.

you can learn a ton from this thread, I used it to do my whole suspension!

could be tires, alignment, worn torsion bars.... many things- take a look at everything when you are in there.

On my '89, not having enough toe-in causes a bump-steer like feeling; lots of vibration in the wheel as every little road irregularity causes the car to slightly dart right and left.

My steering did have some minor play. Then I rebuilt and replaced the front suspension. Turbo tie rods and all new ball joints rebuilt the steering rack and new t-bar bushings and shocks. The steering in like a laser beam now. It is almost to sensitive. If I move the steering wheel the slightest amount the car will change directions. There is zero play.

If you have the original tie rods and ball joints I bet that is your biggest problem with excessive play.

How much slop do you have on the steering while parked? Side to side?

+1 check the alignment numbers, insure bearings are tight and wheels balanced.

Was it a Porsche shop that did the alignment and did you corner balance as well?

I had a more unusual problem with my steering rack. Here is a link to my thread. It has videos in it showing how much play I had in the steering system and how to look for the symptom (tie rod moving up and down vs. in and out).
