I like the mods...a 356B coupe even today wasn't worth saving in that condition. Chip was very relieved that it was a basket case so he could modify it guilt free. Only thing I don't like is the rims...they look like sand dollars. Put some baby moons on and I'd rock it!

If you watched the show or even the clips I posted both Chip and Chris expressed a certain amount of reverence and respect for the porsche Marque and even commented that they were not cutting up a museum piece
..just a clapped rusty old 356.

Interesting polarisation of thoughts in this thread. I wonder what the title and content would have been if the correct credit was given to the Emorys in the first place?

I thought Foose and his team did a great job on the 356. He did exercise some constraints and the build was clean as a result. a 'custom' build isn't going to appeal to everyone's individual tastes. Lots of rocks thrown at the wheels (I'm not a fan) but perhaps they need some contrasting colour or some more void space between the spokes. I really like the interior, and couldn't care less about the non-authentic steering wheel. The bumpers were a nice touch, and a lot more work than just leaving them off. It still looked cool. Originality is thrown out the window as soon as the Swiss cheese mess came back from the media blasters... not sure why so many dwell on the original theme. I'm just glad it wasn't 2 toned.
I haven't watched Overhauling in a while and didn't realize they have a new female lead ... although pretty, could she be any more wooden on screen? |

The guy knew he shouldn't touch the rear window and knows he used the "bad body" as his excuse to butcher it. I'm sorry but there was no rust issue by the rear window and they were able to repair everywhere else (so we are led to believe) car is depreciated greatly now. Yes saved and Yada yada yada but Porsche developed beautiful lines. Don't disrespect them. Go for the outlaw but don't merge another's makers body parts into the chassis. Flare it, chop top, remove bumpers, lower, whatever, all outlaw mods are cool, but the rear window just says ... hey, my head is up my butt and because of it being jammed up there, I have limited visibility so making the rear window smaller won't obstruct my vision any more than it already is.
All Porsches were created equal so just because one chassis was neglected compared to another. It still deserves a chance and not be butchered. Por-vw. Vw-sche. I don't know. ?? What's next a ford pinto / 911 merger? How about a por-vette? Ok ok ok I'll leave it alone. Just don't touch my cars with another manufacturers body pieces

![]() Care to help me with my car. It's my daily driver and a road trip vet. This was several years ago with my first botched attempt at plasti-dip. This car is going under the torch this fall. Bare metal, no bondo, and maybe back with cut down bumpers. Any suggestions on body color? Silver, or black?

I agree too. Anybody else around here have two Riddler Awards? Opinions are like assh*les; you all have one, and so do I. I may not like everything Chip did, but I respect his skill, talent and insight. Respect is the key word. "Crap" is not a word that should ever be used in conjunction with Chip's work. He is an artist. He takes chances. He has a TV show to produce, and not many want to watch 10 episodes on an archival restoration of a 356. Anybody else here got a decade long hit show on car design? He explained how he modified the bumper brackets shortening them so they were closer to the contour of the car. Kind of pre A ish. And that was Rod Emory supervising the engine and transmission issues. No rube there at all.

I could have cried when he cut the oval window out of the Bug body. There were a lot of missed opportunities with this build. Like disk brakes or a five speed or an IRS or.....

my $.02. Like many others I didn't care for the rear window. Having gone through a rustoration on my 64 SC with not nearly that amount of rust, I appreciate their work in saving the car. Not a fan of the Singeresque side stripes. I don't think Chip should be copying Singer's design touches. Would have preferred GT bumper trim.
However I wish I would have seen the following mods - disk brakes, a Dean Polopolus Polo motor and in general suspension upgrades. Not just a stock rebuild. Perhaps they shot their budget on the rust repairs and couldn't afford doing some real outlaw improvements. All in all what a deal for that couple that probably couldn't or wouldn't be able to afford bring their car back to that condition. |

how on earth can you possibly think of placing an oval early beetle rear window frame to a ICONIC 356 !!??
with all respect to taste an skills, but THAT ia a) a style fraud and b) a "security" fraud (as a larger rear window for back sight is a one-step-foreward asset of automobile security features).

Ah, Chip Foose. Yuk! I think he ruins just about every car he touches. If I were the owner of a car that was done without my knowledge or input, I would totally have a stroke. All his stuff looks the same, and by same I mean horrid. He has very bad taste. But that is just my opinion. There could be folks that LOVE his stuff. That is what makes this all so fun. A lot of differing opinions.

He and his crew made that point numerous times -- they were anticipating the blowback from the purists and trying to manipulate that --
