No spark form distributor - help!
 

Looking for help with my no spark issue.

I have a 72 911E that hasn't run for some time. I have just installed an MSD6AL ignition and coil and am having some trouble. I also have installed new battery, cap and rotor, fuel filter, new fuel, new spark plugs, and new ignition wires, new oil filter and oil. I have also adjusted the valves. The engine turns over nicely, but will not start. I think I am getting fuel, because I can smell it. If I pull the center HT lead off the distributor (from the coil), and perform the MSD spark test, I am getting a nice spark to ground there. However, if I pull an ignition wire off a plug, put a spare plug in it, and hold the plug housing to ground, I get no spark when turning the engine over. I also cleaned the trans/eng to body ground strap. Do I have a bad distributor? There is a white wire from the MSD to the distributor body, and there is an original purple wire from the car to the distributor body. Should the purple wire be disconnected? So, I'm getting good power to the distributor from the coil, but nothing out of the distributor to the spark plugs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to prevent a wild goose chase- sure the new rotor is good? Sure it is installed? Try the old rotor.

OP if it is there .. make sure it is turning when you turn the engine over ..

From other threads, the standard rev limiting rotor can melt with MSD.

Did you install a new set of points?

Did you set dwell correctly?

i have left the rotor off myself.

timing is waaaaaay off.

If you get spark out of the coil wire, but not the plug wires, the only thing in between is the cap, rotor and wires. All else is working or you would not have spark from the coil. Again, rotor is most likely culprit as if you had a problem with wires or even if the center of the cap was blown out it would probably jump a spark. Timing could be out 180 degrees and it would still spark. Might run like crap, but it would spark.
