Oil cooler nightmare

Found this lovely gem today when trying to remove cooler and lines . Home made cooler bracket, no rock guard , then the good one . Damaged cooler with horn screw still rubbing after a repair had apparently been made . No cooling fan either . Why do people do crappy work like this , drives me nuts!
Question , are the horns and bracket on later Carrera’s in a different location ? Second , does the Carrera cooler and fan have its own mounting bracket , or how is it supposed to be mounted ? My car is 76 912e with 3.2 and oil lines . First Porsche and seems like not one thing will be untouched by the time I’m through.

Installing the Carrera cooler requires relocating the horns. It's one of the 101 projects in Wayne's book. There should be an online version in the forum somewhere.

This isn’t really a nightmare as I think that you can actually buy all of the parts you need to do the job properly and not expensively. The mounting bracket in the pictures is improvised, there’s a proper one with rubber mounts and also relocating the horns as already mentioned is not difficult. You should also secure the top of the rad to the headlight bowl as Porsche did. Do a search on here, there’s plenty of detail

Not all Carreras came with a fan on the cooler, only the later ones.

They did all come with a shroud/guard however.

That's not quite correct. the 84 Carrera 3.2 came with the 28 tube brass cooler like the 80-83 euro cars. the 28 tube cooler does not have a shroud/guard.

You are correct, I had forgotten about that in between cooler. Thanks for clarifying.

So the radiator looks ugly from the front. But does it leak oil?

Strange that someone was able to fabricate a functional mount, but not figure out a way of moving the horns.

Luckily it does not leak . Im surprised they were able to solder the tubes as bad as it was damaged . Yes , why not move the horns ? I was just baffled at that , especially after it had been damaged . My plan is to relocate horns and reinstall cooler for now . I will source a new/ used cooler and fan assemble and factory mounts for a later project. Motor has been out twice now since Ive had it only 2 years ,for Transmission repair twice and top end rebuild while out 2nd time .
