Sold your early 911? What did u buy next?

Hi guys,
Unfortunately I am thinking about selling my 84 carrera, i just dont have the time to keep up with the maintenance and parts are too expensive for me. When i do sell it i'll probably as for 12k. I'm looking to either break even or save cash in the end. I still want to buy something 5-speed, something sporty. What have you guys moved on to after you sold your early carrera's? What would you recommend? Mustang? Miata? Lets hear it...

p.s. dont be insulted, im 26 years old trying to save for a house which is why i want something more economically feasible but still a blast to drive. But down the road i plan to get another 911 when im settled in.

E36 or E46 BMW with manual transmission and sport package. Lots of nice ones out there in that price range with all maintenance done!

You can find a late model Miata for that $$, lots of fun and bulletproof so you can save your money rather than blow it on incidentals..

I'm going to get shot down here, but oh well!

What about an early Subaru WRX (2002 or newer)? They're reliable, practical, pretty fast, and fun to drive.

ok, so you guys DO realize that the Mazda Miata is the most popular car among young gay males? Why not guy an Audi S4? Maybe a 350Z, or Infiniti G35? there are lots of fun cars that are getting down in price these days. I have a friend at work that just bought an 02 BMW M3 for that price, so that is another option.

If I were not driving a Porsche, an audi would be my next choice.

An Audi A4 is a great car, sporty, and GERMAN! low mileage 03-05 cars can be bought for under $10K and worth every penny. The A6 although not as sporty, is one of the best used-car bargains out there in my opinion.

Good Luck....
You'll be back

Not sure how you are arriving at that determination

As someone from an alternative lifestyle friendly area, I can report that the MX-5 does not appear in any great proportion here than elsewhere.

The other cars mentioned are terrific, but will have a higher TCO than the Mazda.

1999 BMW e36 M3

Last year for the e36 M, great bang for the buck. Awesome daily driver. A near perfect example (with or without performance mods) can now be had for your price.

I'm not at all biased...

I'd rather have a Mini Cooper S. Cars like the G35/350Z/S4 et al feel too big and heavy to me. More GT than sports car.

Of course, I'd rather eat ramen noodles and live in a tent than sell my 911, but if I had to have just 1 car it would almost certainly be a Mini Cooper S with a few choice mods.

I went from a 1981 911SC to a 1998 Boxster - early Boxsters are in the mid-teens, and if you find one that has been taken care of, it shouldn't kill you on maintenance.

I know this is blasphemy on this Board, but the Boxster beats the 911 in just about every way - it's got plenty of luggage space, much easier (and, IMO, more fun) to drive on the track, easier to work on, more reliable (though that's mostly due to its age - I have yet to have to replace anything on the Boxster), and, you can put the top down on nice days.

Cool

My other car is a 2000 Audi A6 2.7t (twin turbo) with 98k miles on it.
See if you can find a 2004 (last year they made it) with decent mileage. If you spot one, be sure to in quire about the timing belt. They need to be replaced every 80-90k mile, at the cost of $1,500 or so.
It is a fun car to drive. I took my family from L.A. to Puerto Penasco, Mexico last month and I enjoyed the reliability, cabin space, cargo space, and working A/C.

For the guys recommending the BMW e36 M3, thanks, i'm really like it, and i'm going to really dig into research on this car. The best part is, it will keep me on the pelican forums if i end up with one!

ive got a really nice low mileage 99 z3 m coupe...six speed with most all dinan upgrades, quaife, supercharged, kinesis k58s, big brakes, etc etc etc 44500 miles. that would be a nice move for you...cooling system has been upgraded to zionsville all aluminum racing radiator with aluminum overfill can, stewart water pump, also oil cooler, beefed up dual ear differential carrier with rogue engineering extra capacity cover, electric fans, and on and on.

+1. Most of the 911s I've sold I've done so to get a Boxster. Love them.

I have similar thought but have not have the gut to do it yet. Here is my possible list of my next car:
Toyota mini van (I have kids)
996 (I love P)
pick up truck ( I have family)
old Civic (cheaper to have fun with)
old Celica (cheaper to have fun with)

The A4 is in fact a great, sporty car. My mom bought one and it was such a nice car that my sister bought one as well. However, their experiences of ownership have been horrific. Both cars have left them stranded several times and maintenance has been extremely expensive. These are not cheap cars to operate. I realize everyone's experiences are different, but I wouldn't recommend this car to really anyone, and certainly not to someone looking to cut back on maintenance costs.
