How important is it to strap down the fire extinguisher?

While getting on the gas coming out of a downhill 25-mph right turn at a semi-rural intersection I heard a mad hiss as the cabin filled with white clouds. Instantly blind, I immediately pushed in the clutch, killed the motor, and steered toward the guardrail. Took me a minute to figure out what was going on. The extinguisher rolled out from under the seat, and somehow the pin came out and the lever activated itself, fittingly, on a boring surrealist novel a friend had loaned me.

No real need to strap it down now.

The picture is upside down? Or did you roll it whilst in the fog?

Most PCA events REQUIRE the FE to be mounted metal to metal.
Guess you learned your lesson. Those DE tech guys were not doing their job.

That's no fun.

I bought this mount from Grainger for $9 and attached it to my roll bar to hold my $20 Kidde FE. For $29 there's no reason not to have one.

Make sure you get that cleaned completely. Dry chemical extinguishers facilitate rust.

Ok. Now I don't feel as bad having to spend on the extinguisher AND mounts.

A quick Google search turned this up: How to clean up after a fire extinguisher discharge? - Safelincs.co.uk

Good luck.

Interestingly, this other site says Halotron requires no cleaning... And I have Halotron (I think). But I'm not going to try. http://www.doityourself.com/stry/how-to-clean-up-fire-extinguisher-chemicals#b

I know that all too well
Took a coworker over to another building and went around the corner not that fast but I had some calibrated weights in the back with one seat folded down. The other side i had my fire extinguisher in the seat with some floor mats over it drying due to a leaky sunroof. Well after going around that corner the weights fell over on top of the mats with the extinguisher and it set it off. My friend screamed, I thought it was a fire and we pulled over and jumped out! I started to laugh out loud as it must have looked like a bad 80's movie with white powered going ever where! Lucky for me the nozzle was pointed in the seat crack and contained most of it and the mats also helped.

My solution:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/730642-bk-extinguisher-mount.html
Uber-trick, spendy, but cooler than cool:
http://www.bkauto.com/R_9520_Quick_Release_Fire_Extinguisher_Mount_p/r-9520.htm
The real reason for having a secure quick release mounting system is so that you can get the extinguisher out and deployed without having to look for it.

I've seen 2 drivers killed by their fire extinguishers. In both cases the bottle broke lose in an accident and hit them in the head.

This is pretty bad. This owner has a death wish.

I like this much better.

Maybe the premise was wrong. Perhaps the car needs to be bolted to the extinguisher. Have an extra extinguisher, you may need another 911. It's all perspective

After having to clean up after a dry chemical extinguisher once, I decided to switch to Halon.

Someone once said:

I think it may have been my dad...
or John Wayne?

From experience, BEFORE, you get it "all cleaned up and nice" turn on, to highest settings, any fan operated device, a/c, defroster etc. No fun to have secondary activations!!
