Fresh air blower fan switch
I've just had my fresh air blower apart (83 sc) to lubricate as it was squealing.
Once finished, I plugged it in to give it a dry run and it was smooth, quiet and even appeared to rev faster. So I put every thing back together and then found out the fan switch lever at the dash would not move from the off position. It somehow appears to be hung up for whatever reason. It looks as though I'll have to remove the complete heater control unit from the dash to see what is preventing the lever from moving. Finally, my question is, how do I go about removing that control assembly from the dash? Thx Hugh c |

sliders.

However, I suspect that somehow one of the Bowden cables are not routed correctly, and binding. Have a look under the dash while someone tries to work the slider. Also, perhaps one of the clamps that holds down the cable has come loose. Good luck, Gerry

If you didn't mess with it, why would anything change there? Probably related to what you did with the motor linkage/flaps or cable hookup. disconnect the cable at the motor and see if it slides then.

Also you will likely discover that the fan will work for a short time but soon be making noise again. Most of the time the only cure is to replace the fan motor. Silly expensive and pretty poor quality. It is what it is.

Thanks guys,
The only cable that I removed is the one that opens/closes the flaps on either side of the motor enclosure and I think I replaced it properly. The flaps open and close together as I move the lever at the dash. Looking at a pic of the speed control switch (the one in the dash) I failed to see how it would have any effect on any of the cables as it doesn't appear to be attached to any of the cables. It appears t be no more than a three position switch. Both lower levers at the dash move very freely, ie no binding. The speed control lever however is stopped hard in the OFF position. During the repair I used the speed control switch once and that was to see how well the motor ran after I cleaned and lubed it. I'll have to remove everything again tomorrow to see if I missed anything but I'm quite certain the switch is binding somehow in the dash. Hughc |

It is a really simple system, google some images and you’ll be able to reach under dash and pull on some things

Only one cable goes to the fan box, the upper slider. As it moves to the right, the fan speed contacts come into play.

Before going to bed last night I decided to have another look at it and pulled the air blower box out again. The only thing that appeared wrong was the crank position for the flap on the passenger's side of the air box. I repositioned it, screwed everything back together and voila it all worked as it should. So I can assume the crank position was causing the problem Thanks to those that replied with their suggestions. Hughc |
