Noise in sc engine
Suspect this will be expensive....
My sc has developed a rather loud noise - seems to be a loud tapping inside the engine - still runs and starts ok, maybe a slight loss of powe. Exhaust system seems intact and sound appears to be from the engine itself. The car has fairly recently undergone a top end rebuild. Sort of hoping there may be some simple answers....... Any comments? Cheers Kevin |
Can we hear it? Perhaps make a recording with your phone.

It would be nice if it is only this. Sometimes the air pipes going to the exhaust port blow out, or the plugs screwed in as a replacement fall out. This happened with my SC so I was pleased it hadn't blown a hole in a piston or something.
A recording or more desciption would help. Good luck. |
check rockers
check chain tensioners. |
Not noted where you are, or year of car,
The USA cars only used air injection 78/79 The ROW used them through all the 3.0 If all 6 head inserts are in place, bolts or airlines, I would pull the plug and screen to see what is in the magnet and screen looking for spun bearing material in the oil. Bruce |
Any updates on your motor??

Hi Kevin
I've been through a lot of this in the past year, you can read about it here if you want to: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/826025-clackety-clackety-clackety-clack.html I finally took my SC to an experienced P mechanic and he's fairly certain that what I'm hearing are the valves smacking closed into their seats. I already knew that the PO cheaped out and didn't rebuild the heads on the engine overhaul, so it is what it is. My mechanic basically said that so long as we're sure that the valves are adjusted correctly then the noises are as described and aren't an immediate problem, but will likely worsen over time. So I'll drive the car this summer and then decide what to do next when winter comes. Good luck! |
