The Alternator went out on my 84 cab. Had it rebuilt by Houston Alternator & Starters. While I was there, started cleaning the Fan and Housing; scrubbed, degreased and even ran it through the dishwasher when no one was around. Everything clean but dull. Started polishing and soon realized that any success would be a long term project so I started looking around for coatings. Long story shorter, I went down and talked to the folks at Polydyn Performance Coatings, (PolyDyn.com) here in Houston and they took me through several different coatings that they do and i was impressed. I picked a medium silver color and am pretty impressed with the results. Now to fit it all together, needless to say the alignment marks put on by the village idiot are now missing so will look at some pictures in this forum and press on.

Nice color and finish Doug. Also like that you matched fan & house. What is coating? (Might have to put house on lathe to regain clearance for alt.)

Disceven: You are absolutely right, I did a test fit last night, alternator rides about 1/4 inch high from the bottom of housing. Seems to be the same on the fan to shaft. I don't know why I didn't ask if those areas could be uncoated, distracted by a bright and shiny object I suppose. In the first place it took a lot of effort and John Walker's methodology to get it separated. One would think that if you subtract from zero clearance, it's not going to get better. Off to find a machine shop, want to do this right.
They told me the coating, but it was a scientific name and I don't remember but it contains nylon and aluminum.

Fan & Air guide.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ^^^^^ The fan & housing were initially incorrectly powder coated, not leaving the required fan blade tips/housing clearance. The powder coating was removed and, I used John Walker's approach of bead blasting/heat paint. Very pleased with the results. Gerry

Targa: That was the color scheme I originally wanted to start off with but I didn't want to drill out rivets, to get the plating done. Time will tell how durable this coating is but any fix up will not be DYIY. I think your's came out better than mine. And when I look at your engine compartment I am super impressed. Thanks for the assembly alignment shot also.
