what is it

I am looking to purchase a 1982 911 Targa, it has a Carrera emblem on it, the seller claims it was imported from thailand, US records only go back to 4/17/91 when it passed the California emission inspection in Palmdale. Vin is wpoea0910cs161553, engine number is 930-106-102 OR. I seems to be a 3.0 normally aspirated SC. What is it?

Check the fog lamps in the front valance. If they are just about flush mount, you have a 3.2 body. If they hang from the bumper bottom, you have an SC.

Best bet from what you are describing? A rebadged SC.

It's an SC by the VIN. C is the clue
That's not an engine number but a casting number

Alternator fan housing casting number.........

930-106-102-OR is the fan housing cast number. It is not the engine serial number. Look at the lower right side where the alternator housing is mounted, on a flat vertical surface would be the 7-digit/character for the engine number. And the engine type is close by (930/??). Keep us posted.

should have either a 930-10 row engine if imported or a 930-16 if US.

Just stick a Super in front of the Carrera and you'll be good.
Nice looking targa.

Thanks for all the feedback! Will go back and get the correct engine number.... The guy wants
$19,500. mileage is not as it seems at 105,000...Any idea on value? body is clean, no rust, 1 scratch on passenger side door. Motor doesn't smoke, brakes good, very fast.. seats need to be recovered, leather is kind of beat. Doors close easily

You should have someone take a look at it, $19000 is a great price and it looks like a nice targa but make sure there's no broken headstuds or other serious issues otherwise your $19,000 targa could cost you $29,000 or more.

Per the VIN, this is a US/Canada '82 911 SC Targa. Therefore, not imported from Thailand (there's gotta be a joke in there somewhere).

According to Hagerty valuation tools, a Condition 4 is worth $14,900, and a Condition 3 is $28,000. At $19,500 that's a decent price I think.

Depending on service records, mileage, and PPI (which you should absolutely get), could be a great deal. Although the "imported from Thailand" seems a bit sketchy. Remember that you're buying the seller in addition to the car.

also keep in mind that Thailand follows England's lead and cars drive on the left hand side of the road. A thai-spec car should therefore have the steering wheel on the right?

owner claims he had a pressure test and all cylinders came in at 130-140. engine serial number via text is 64C276, it's a 100 miles away and he just got this to me..

Best advice I can give with one of these cars is to pay for a pre purchase inspection (PPI) by a mechanic who knows these cars (and their issues) and has not previously been working on the car you're looking at. If you're willing to share the car's location, I'm sure folks on the board will chime in with potential PPI resources

hi,
About Carrera emblem on the back - in Asia many cars had this emblem directly from Porsche on SC. For Asian market it was important because people are familiar with Carrera name.
I have 1983 SC cabrio and it also has Carrera emblem - this car is 100% original and this is a way it came from Porsche.
As far as VIN - yes it is US specs, and the cars imported to Japan/Thai were US specs - not euro. This is because of emission standards. For Japan Porsche started different digit number to designate Japanese market.

Here is mine 1983 SC Cabrio with Carrera emblem:

That's interesting hotaru. You say the car is US spec but you have euro rear bumper guards on your car. Are those original or did you change them?

Chris, If that targa looks as good in person as in the picture and runs great, I think that is a decent price in todays market.

Regardless of owners claims, I'd suggest getting a PPI done at a reputable shop as others have mentioned.

You aren't Chris Robb in downtown LA are you?

lsf911,
for Japan market (at least for SC) there is a special number in VIN - #9 in last 4 digit of serial number- means Japan specs. The car is euro specs but engine is US specs (because of emission).
So, on my 1983 SC Cabriolet - everything is 100% original, euro bumpers too. Nothing has been changed. That is why I had problems when i was sourcing parts for fuel injection - WUR/Fuel Distributor was up to US specs.

Here is some more info about production data for Japan market on SC:

carrera

No i am not from LA, i am on the big island of Hawaii, Waimea to be exact, the car is in Ocean View at the other end of the island. Thanks for all the help, this blog is extremely useful, i had a '56 356a in my twenties and sold it when i moved to this island, with current values for that car i made a huge mistake selling it! Had the porsche bug for years and have been looking for a 911 for a while now when i stumbled on to this one.The owners stories are interesting but the paper trail is non existent, other than what CarFax came up with. No Us records until '91.. Will do the PPI, thanks again for all the insight!
