Thumbs up 1st road trip... car show... shenanigans... lots of fun

This weekend was a momentous occasion in my Porsche ownership. After 4 years (gosh, almost 5 now) of owning the car, I finally got to take her on her first real road trip -- annual boys weekend at the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d'Elegance.

That's a long time of ownership to wait for a road trip, right? Well, the car was not reliable at all when I bought it. I had to start it with a screwdriver. Lots of things didn't work or ran poorly. It smoked a lot. Electrical gremlins. Lots of oil leaks. And every year it seemed like I had the car in some state of repair. This year was finally my chance and it was great. Still some little things to sort out -- more on that later. In the meantime I thought you guys might enjoy some of the pics from the trip.

Some of Germany's finest started to gather.

Group shot. Our little concours in the driveway. From left to right. 2006 Carrera S, 2009 Cayman, my 1983 SC Coupe and a 1983 SC Targa.

First day of the show pics starts here. I took a ton of pics but I'll limit it to Stuttgart's finest (and a little bit of some other German marques).

Day 1 is 'Club Car' day. No judging -- just people bringing out cool cars and they usually have some nice displays by each marque. Porsche always represents well and the last couple of years they had test drives set up. Last year was the Macan. Didn't bother this year -- it takes a lot of time and you have to follow a pace car so it's not very fun.

914-6

This car has less than 30k original miles and has been preserved, not restored. It is considered a 'reference' car because it is untouched.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I could be wrong that this car not been restored. Their was a sahara beige 914 on Day 2 and I might be confused on the facts. Anyway, they were both beautiful.

This might have been my favorite car of the entire show. I wanted to talk to the owner but he disappeared right after I snapped this pic. If the owner is a Pelican, hats off to you, sir! You have a beautiful car!

I thought the dirt was a nice touch.

Oil cooler is mounted in the right quarter window.

Yep, this is my 3rd or 4th year but first time I've been able to take the 911.

Another buddy was supposed to be with us but he is currently doing a tour in Afghanistan. When he gets back we're all going to the Amelia Island Concours.

The weather was perfect. Sunny, highs in the 70s, lows in the high 60s. Good friends. Good cars. What more can you ask for?

We staged our own island rallye and gave out our own awards. I got the Best Exhaust Note Award. The guys that got there ahead of me were waiting in the driveway because they heard me coming.

I'm having to resize some of the photos to keep the file size down for upload so it's taking a little time. I'll keep slowly updating. Keep checking back.

Another 356. I think this one was a 'Pre-A'

Beautiful 21-window bus. Yes, please. Another one showed up on Day 2.

I don't think this car needs an introduction. It was awesome to see it up close.

We all agreed that the perfect license plate for this car would be A$$MAN

BMW had a display set up next to the Porsche display. There was a huge crowd around the 918. People were generally walking right past the BMW display to get to the 918.

It's great to hear a positive outcome to an unreliable SC being brought back from the depths of life. After 5 years of sorting, numerous tows, and more money invested than I'd like to admit...mine went the other way and dropped a valve seat. Enjoy

You are correct. I uploaded the wrong photo. The GT4 was next to it in the file list.

I will correct the post and upload the photo of the GT4.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. A group of us were standing around talking this weekend and someone lamented how much money they had spent on their car. One guy said "just enjoy the privilege of preserving a little bit of history." Probably sound advice... until you drop a valve seat.

Another great line was "You know how to make a million dollars restoring cars? Start with $10M."
