i purchased a '68 911 swt in need of restoration and had it trucked 30mi by rollback to the shop doing the resto. the truck arrived before i did, and when i pulled in to the lot, there was my car, still on the rollback but minus the targa bar. of course no one claims responsibility and i'm stuck with finding a replacement. the shop said it arrived like that and the driver said he never saw a thing. the po said the targa bar had never been off the car, so how did this happen? anybody?

They are held on by 4 small studs that are typically rusty. I'd imagine the wind from transport could blow it off if they were in bad shape.
Check high up/forward under the rears fender to see if there are any remnants of the studs or bolts.

I wasnt thinking to clearly when i replied earlier... There are also 10 or so screws around the front edge behind rear targa bar seal. I suppose if they had been removed it could blow off. With those screws in place i dont see how it could blow off. Sorry about the incomplete reply earlier.
Some good pics here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/201576-removing-targa-bar-3.html

My vote is also that it blew off in the wind.....Same happened to me with the air box cover when transporting my engine in my pickup for a swap........

If the bar blew off I would be amazed. Was the Targa top on the car? If so then I really can't see how the aerodynamics would pull the bar off. At least half the screws in my bar have their heads busted off and my bar is rock solid...and I almost never drive with the top on.

It's an extreme unlikelihood that the bar flew off in transit unless it had had all the fasteners removed and was simply laying there. The Pelican "Haycalt" may have a few bars hanging around. Cheers

Could be they pulled / towed / abused the bar loading the car, which snapped off, then they disposed of the evidence?...
