Steel backdate - center panel meets muffler

Doing a steel backdate on my 1985 3.2 targa (stock California car). I have installed the bumpers and the center panel to find out that the center panel impacts the bumper. My estimate is that I need to somehow move the muffler about 1/2"-3/4" to get the center panel to line up correctly with the lower bumper section. Anyone else run into this?

I do not want to notch the center panel. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike: I am not doing the backdate - but here is a pic of my Jack Olsen style magnaflow exhaust - skinnier than stock. Not sure if you would consider modding the muffler.

That is not out of the question...thanks C&D. I will research that as a fallback plan.
