Removing rear A/C Condenser on '87 911 w/Rear Wiper - help!
 

Hello,

I am trying to remove my rear A/C condenser so that I can flush it out, and straighten any bent fins in anticipation of installing a new Griffith's A/C system. This should be simple, but of course the condenser is held on on the driver's side with a bolt that is blocked by the rear wiper motor. I have removed the two bolts for the motor that go through the engine lid hinge, and also the wiper arm itself. The ground strap has been pulled through as well. I figured it should be able to drop down now, but it seems stuck in the part that passes through the engine lid to the arm. This is very frustrating, and I don't want to break something.

How do I drop this motor down? It seems like I may need to remove the black cone shaped piece that fits over the splined lug for the wiper arm (exterior of car), but it seems like it's on there pretty good.

Recently helped my buddy's 88 with rear wiper. I do recall it was a PITA.

Post a pic so I can recall what I did to get it off.

Under the black cone is another nut. The cone must come off so you can get to that nut.

Edit - the black cone is a press fit, it is not threaded. Lift or pry it straight off.

I'll try removing the black cone after work and see if that helps the situation.

Worse case scenario if you can't get the unit off the deck lid, and assuming you are replacing the AC lines:

1) Deck lid up.
2) On the LH side of the car in front of the LH rear tire, remove the hose clamps that secure the hose to the bottom of the tub under the sill plate.
Disconnect the rear condenser to front condenser hose at the deck lid condenser (LH side hinge).
3) Leave the hose connected to the deck lid condenser's on the LH hinge.
4) Cut the hose under the car so it hangs down near the LH rear tire, allowing 3-4 inches off the ground.
5) Disconnect the hose from the compressor to condenser at the condenser side on the RH side.
6) Put a catch basin under the hose on the LH side to catch the AC flush. If you can cover the basin with plastic so the flush does not splash on the car its' advisable.
7) Liquid flush through the condenser's inlet port on the RH side.
8) Blow out condenser with air.
9) Let condenser sit in the sun for a few hours
10) Blow out one more time.

Thanks Griff. I'll do that if I'm unsuccessful with dropping the motor down to access the bolt.

Thanks all, I was able to get the motor to come down slightly after loosening the nut hidden under the black cone piece on the top of the deck lid. After that, getting the condenser out was easy.
