Jute Carpet Backing: Does This Belong?
I've got most of the old carpeting out of my '87 Cabriolet and I'm strategizing on installing the new set. Here's the challenge: the old carpet is an aftermarket set that a previous owner put in, so it's not a perfect reference for the factory installation. Example: The new tunnel carpet piece was installed right over the top of the old tunnel carpet piece! My question is about the jute padding that I found under the front and rear floor sections.
The front and rear main pieces had jute backing under them but it looked like the PO put the jute backing down after the tunnel carpet and some of the side pieces were installed, so the jute overlaps on top of some pieces. I'd like to re-use the jute for the padded, cushy feel, but I've got two questions: would jute padding under the carpet set be stock for an 87 Cabriolet? If it is stock, shouldn't the jute go down first and the carpet set overlap on top of the jute? Or would it be better to install all of the side pieces and lay the jute down to overlap on top to allow for easier removal if it gets wet? Thanks in advance, GK

I think your previous owner added the jute.

That's my guess too, although the jute looks to be identical to that jute that's on the inner surface of the footwell blower covers, and I'm pretty sure that those were factory. Regardles, I think I'll keep it since it's in good shape, it will add some cushy-ness and smooth out the appearance of the carpeting. It may also add to the carpet's lifespan since it will provide shock absorption.
I'm inclined to put the center tunnel, front and side pieces in then trim the jute so that it has minimal or no overlap with those pieces, put the jute down lightly glued, then put the floorboard carpet pieces down using some Velcro at the rear of each piece to keep them from being pushed forward when passengers enter/exit.
