Oil Tank Line Leak

Just put a brand new oil line that goes from the oil tank to the thermostat. It is now leaking when the car is running. I tightened it a bit more and still leaking. It's as tight as it's going to be. The brand of the line is German. Any experience with these lines and how to fix the leak? Frustrating that a brand new line doesn't work.

If there is some dirt or a nick on either of the mating surfaces in the fitting, you will get a leak.

You might try using a little Curl-T.

When you installed it did you insure it was properly seated and torqued to spec?

yes it was cleaned thoroughly and tried to keep it pressed properly while tightening. As far as torque, tightened it by hand (no extension to the open ended wrench), tight first, it was leaking, then tighter, still leaking. Tightened it some more till i couldn't anymore.Couldn't use a torque wrench nor do i know the proper torque for it.

Curil-T - would there be any concern of the sealant getting in the oil? i get it's only a little just cautious using foreign materials where they don't belong.

I had a leak on one of those lines, it turned out what was going on was the line was not free to fully mate while the nut was threaded and tightened and it would bind seemed tight but it was not fully sealed.

I fixed it by loosening the nut and then taking all of the mounts for the line to the body free so the line would not be under any stress. Re- tightened the nut - it went a whole turn or more farther than before and no leak.

That said yours looks fully seated. The worst thing is all the oil has to come back out...arrgh.

I would pull that fitting back apart and look at the mating surfaces as mentioned above. If its leaking it can ONLY be two or three things.

- There is a nick in the sealing surface

- its not tight so oil can get by the seating surface

- the two seating surfaces have different angles so they wont mate and seal (wrong part)

Looking at it again. Is it possible there is a crack in the 50 year old oil tank or the weld right there?

maybe go crazy and pull the tank out and clean the heck out of it and have a look.

I was thinking of replacing that same line. Did you have much problem taking it off at the thermostat? I've seen that some need to cut and chisel the connector off...

No didn’t have any issues taking the old off. The more I think about it, the more I think these new aftermarket parts don’t have the same exact mating surface. Will take it off one more time and see how it goes

To be safe, use a dremel and split the thermostat nuts being very careful not to hit the thermostat threads or get shavings in there. This will insure nut if frozen will not take the thermostat material with it when you break it loose.

OP, when you remove it, take a close look at the mating surfaces.

It’s really a shame that thy sell these as OEM replacement and the quality is sub par. Just looked at the reviews on the Pelican product page and it looks like two other people had the same issue. I was comparing the old original line to the new one and the nut is different. I wouldn’t be surprised if the flare is different as well although I can’t confirm it without tearing both apart.

That’s the plan. Second time I took it off didn’t notice anything and it looked clean. I’m going to take it off a third time tonight and inspect it in more detail. If it doesn’t work after that maybe go for the Porsche brand line

Put a Porsche OEM line in today. Leak is 99% gone. Seems like a very very very slow seepage. Just basically getting the part between the nut and the tank wet after a drive, not even going down the nut/tank. No drops which is a huge improvement. Maybe need to tighten it a bit more but didn’t want to put too much torque on it. I’m happy with the result
