Another post on gear oil ... need help choosing

Hi all,
i've passed last two days reading on about gear oils, but I still need your precious suggestions.

My local dealer (in italy) can only provide Castrol Syntetic oil (GL4), non suitable for my transmission or Motul 80W90 GL5 Dino based. (No Swepco, No Kendall NS-MP, no RedLine).

Here are the two Motul products
Motul HD 80W90 -> Mineral Oil, API GL-4/GL-5 ----> product page

Motul Gearbox 80W90 -> Mineral Oil, API GL-4/GL-5, Moly reinforced ----> product page

Price difference is negligible (about 2$ more for the Moly reinforced) and looking at Motul site both seems to be suitable for my transmission.

My transmission is a 915 stock transmission from 1973 never rebuilt and it has 85000Km. I think it’s in good shape because it don’t grind, isn’t noisy (just a little bit), but sometimes, especially when hot, it’s hard to shift from 1st to 2nd (upshift) and from 5th to 4th (downshift).

Can you please tell wich oil should I prefer ...aka ... to moly or not to moly ??? ;-)

I ask because I learned i have to avoid syntetic oils in 915s but is there any contraindication with Moly additives??

Dear Joe,
you're a lucky man... 'cause you're in USA ...
I'm from Italy and here there is no Swepco importer.
Shipping cost from US to Italy are about 60$ (pelican or ebay) ... and i prefer to pay for the oil and not for the shipping ! ;-)

Anyway the difference between Motul HD and Gearbox should be similar to Swepco 201 and 203.

Is there a definite reason why you choose 201 ?
Have you ever used 203 ?
Why do you still prefer 201 above 203?

Either one is a good oil, use the Moly if you have a noisy box.

The Motul is an excellent gear oil. Stay away from the moly version of you have an lsd. Its too slippery.
