Post Cure oil consumption with change of brand?

Hi all,

I am having some oil consumption problems on my 88. I am hoping that it isn't the valve guides! I was reading a question in Excellence in which Bruce Anderson suggests changing brands of oil to see if that would cure it. Was wondering if anyone has any first hand experience in this. I am currently using Valvoline 20/50 in my car. Was noticing in the oil article on Pelican that Valvoline has a pretty high volitility.
Thought I would give the brand change a shot but wanted to hear what everyone had to say.

Mark

It's cheaper than engine work.

Try switching to Kendall GT-1 20-50w. It's a little bit more expensive, but good oil. What is your current consumption?

Road & Track has reported that changing to Castrol GTX 20W-50 has reduced oil consumption in some cases in the past.

Bruce Anderson is always making cryptic references to a certain brand of oil not to use in 911's, but cannot name it in column for obvious reasons,(he doesn't want to get his ass sued off). Do any of you guys know what it is?

Castrol GTX I believe. That was years ago, for all I know their formula is completely different now.

I am also a fan of Castrol. As a reader of Consumer Reports, I recall that Castrol won 1st place during comparo-test.

However, with a new rebuilt engine, I use Mobil-1. I'll soon switch to Castrol when (and if) leaks start.

HMMH, I was recommended Castrol GTX (2) when I bought the car from Munich. Why not use the castrol? Any side effects except that the engine consumes much of the oil?

PS: Running Castrol GTX 2 now

My SC leaks the least when I use Pennzoil 20-50. I guess the brown sludge stuff seals up all the wee gaps.

Since I found out from this site I was the only guy using Pennzoil I swapped to Castrol GTX 20-50.
