Looking for Trusty Shop for an Engine and Transmission Rebuild

Hey all,

It has been a while but I have returned to the world of pelican parts. My trusty 1980 SC Targa has been off the road the last couple of years to allow me to finish my masters and PhD work and while I am now full time employed, I am looking for a place to get her engine and transmission brought back from the resting, as I have neither the time or space to do the work properly right now.
As such, I was wondering if someone on the forum has a good contact in the San Francisco / San Jose area of a trusted Porsche shop to take on the task of making her road worth again.
I would really love to see the engine get taking down completely and get everything from new main bearings to valve guides done to her. While out of commission, it seems like the best time to also get new synchros in the old 915.
Any recommendation and past experiences are appreciated.

Thanks,

-L3FOS

I am an old man with a bachelors degree. I ain't as sharp as you but why do you want to spend $15k getting a $28k SC spiffed up?

Tell us what is wrong.

I can look online for a good repair shop and probably guide you fairly.

Is that all you need? Spill the beans, Doctor.:D

(Congrats, btw)

Honestly, I have had the car as my daily driver starting when I was doing my bachelors and working as a Porsche mechanic on the side. She stood by me for ~20k miles / year without ever leaving me stranded. I had to put her on the dry for my studies and now I am looking to get my daily driver back and am willing to spend the money. Just wondering if anyone knows and has experience of a good shop.

Thanks!

Tom Amon (Mobile Works West) in San Jose. Only deals with air cooled P cars. Best mechanic/engine builder I've ever met and the nicest guy to deal with. Tom does everything from oil changes to race car builds. He routinely does engine and tranny rebuilds and his work is impeccable. Air cooled mechanic for 35 plus years. He also used to successfully race 917s…..great to chat to.

Yep, what he says about Tom. Can't go wrong there.
