1st batch of parts back from zinc plating
I pulled the engine and transmission from my 84 Targa and am doing a major refresh. I just got the first batch of parts back from plating for the intake.
I used a fine wire wheel brush on a bench grinder to clean everything up before I sent them out. I spent several hours on the wire wheel and it helped everything come out great: ![]()

Nice EM.
Are you inclined to share details.. Who did the plating, cost, time frame, problems if any? .

I do the same wire wheel on a bench grinder prep. I’ve tried lots of other methods but the wire wheel is good for 98% of the prep.

I used Cadillac Plating in Orange, CA.
I think it was $60 for the batch and took about 3 days. No issues and the parts came out great! https://www.yelp.com/biz/cadillac-plating-co-orange |

Had a batch done in SFV, zero prep, came out amazing. Not worth the time to wheel everything imo. Infact I had sand blasted one of the brackets before, and could not tell them apart when I got them back.

Always satisfying to get back nasty old hardware from plating!
I agree however, probably not necessary to spend time wire wheeling anything. I dropped off all the metal hardware from an entire car, exactly as it came off, rusty and all as you see it below, and it all came out great. They do one or two acid baths before the zinc plating, so any surface finish or corrosion gets removed automatically. 1 by lukas.matzinger, on Flickr 2 by lukas.matzinger, on Flickr 3 by lukas.matzinger, on Flickr

Local platers charge by the pound.
The more the cheaper it is. The hard work is prepping everything. Degrease, corrosion removal, dents, bends |

Same with mine. I prep and then it’s about $1/lb.

Lukas, what are the wings for on the grinder? The one on the top left of the three.

I added a couple of cheap cordless ones since then, so much more convenient to have them all ready to go with various discs to work anywhere.

Ah now I get what he meant!
Yeah those are 2 steel mounts/racks next to each other, that hold 3 (small) grinders each.

Plating
Didn’t see this but I sent a batch to someone but did not understand what fully prepped meant.
Soak in white vinegar and old coating is removed. Careful with magnesium though. Just my 2 cents.

Gotcha. I guess I need one or two. Actually have that same grinder on the left which is what piqued my interest.
