4.0 964 motor

Hi,
I need to rebuild my 964 motor and am looking at different options.
Is anyone familiar with a 4.0 motor for a 964. I saw Singer is installing them in there cars, but I have not been able to find any other information.
Thanks

They are done by Ed Pink and are not for the faint of wallet.

I am familiar with Ed Pink, but was not thinking of going this route.
I was wondering if anyone else builds them, their reliability and availability of parts.

Try talking with Jae at Mirage International in San Diego (Miramar to be exact). He builds the 3.8L Singer engines. He is very knowledgeable, pick his brain about a 4.0L.

I've built a couple and other than bragging rights - it's not worth it

SO much machining and clay . . . It's like building three engines.

Anyway, even if I had the money for the parts I wouldn't bother building one for myself. Too many limiting factors

This is the Ed Pink 4.0

God, that's beautiful. Any body know how much that is? $60-75K?

This looks great too...

Call Supertec, they may be able to with their supercrank?

This, and just do it 3.8.

Jeff Gamroth at Rothsport or Steve Wiener from Rennsport Systems out of Portland. Those guys are magicians.

Ive been digging into this. Basically a 4.0 is a motor with a bore of 102.7mm ( LN Nickies, I betcha ) and a stroke of 80.4OR it means 104mm bore and 78.4 stroke. This means either a GT3 crankshaft or a custom crankshaft. I am pretty sure you'd also have to use a non-stock oil pump, and you'd have to tweak the rods a bit, and I bet the piston-to-valve clearance will probably require some piston-crown machining.
So, $6K for the pistons and cylinders, $4.5K for the new crank, $1200 for the new oil pump, $1200 for the rods, oh, yeah, gotta twin-plug it to run 11.5:1 compression, so that means EFI and an EMS, which is open-ended but you can spend a LOT of money on that. Then there's induction. You want Velocity stacks or that beautiful big-bore plenum?
The options are endless and astronomically priced;)

If you just want to boost your displacement, you can swap your pistons an cylinders for a set of Nickies in any size from 100m bore ( stock ) to 106mm, which brings your displacement to a touch over 4.0. Call LN Engineering and see what their tech advisors have to say. They'd be the ones who can say 'for that size, you need twin-plugging', or, 'here's the biggest displacement you can go and still keep the rest of your motor stock'.

Road & Track lists the bore at 102 mm and the stroke at 80.4 mm for a total of 3940 cc.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1477063225.jpg

so anything even close is considered 4.0 then?

tirwin 10-21-2016 08:51 AM

Isn't a 964 motor already twin plugged?

Bleedsblue 10-21-2016 09:10 AM

Well Singer has a few engine options, could it be that R&T car was a 3.9? If not, a surprising number of tuners and OEMs round up rather generously on engine displacement.

Good. For a minute I was worried that I had started drinking early. :D

No, it was me in his cups. I was on a roll, what the hell.

gtc 10-21-2016 11:06 AM

If you're really ambitious, there are 82 and even 84mm cranks out there. Go big or go home, right?
