Back-dating Heating System
 

Hi All,

I'm thinking of backdating my heating system and was wondering if it is feasable to do so on an 83 SC with auto-heat. I'm guessing it'll be OK?

I picked this list of parts up from an old post, is this correct for my '83?

Left hot air duct, 930.106.321.02
4 plastic nuts, 999.591.592.40
2 rubber plugs, 999.703.044.50
Right hot air duct, 911.106.327.00
Right engine cover plate, 911.106.036.00
Right engine cover, 911.106.827.00
Right air duct support, 911.106.331.00

Also does anyone know of any tech articles that cover this? (or any tips!)

You've got it right. Yes you can do this to the autoheat. I did this about two months ago. The auto heat only controls the operation of the flapper boxes.

You can also do a search in the archieves on my name. I had some good discussions.
I would suggest getting the parts used; easy, less time, and cheaper than the dealer.
Once you get the parts, just look at the engine bay. The only really tricky part is the left side scoop assembly. It's like a jigsaw puzzle.

turbos, 78-86, had a metal left side heat tube from the exchanger up thru the left side tin. it works very well with stock exchangers. actually clears converters and bypass pipes, and eliminates that impossible bend that the hose won't do. the filler piece of tin on the left side, with no hole, also needs be changed to the early type with the hole for the hose to go thru.

I think the left side takeoff I am using is from a turbo (Thanks, John). The regular one was too fat. Apparently, our SC distributors are fatter than early distributors. The regular takeoff would not fit because the distributor was in the way. The turbo one allows room for the distributor.

And of course, the turbo one adds 15 horsepower.;)

FWIW, I've got an 83SC with auto heat controls and did not purchase nearly as many parts. Tried the dealer with that long list of parts and the bill was over $250. Instead, I called EASY (510) 653-EASY and got a used right and left hand duct from an older car for about $50 delivered. Not quite sure why you would need all the additional supports and plates. Good luck though, it makes the engine compartment look lots better.
