Valvoline VR1 20w50 at $1qt at Autozone

Just drove around the eastern side of the Twin Cities and got almost 60 qts. I should be covered for the 911, 968, and 951 for a while....

It just went on clearance for 1 dollar per quart.

man that's crazy

reclino 03-14-2017 03:57 PM

Thanks for the heads up, I just pulled 55 quarts from the surrounding stores.

GothingNC 03-14-2017 04:40 PM

Did AZ stop carrying it?
I do not see it on their website.

arbita1 03-14-2017 05:02 PM

The typical auto stores don't seem to carry any good 20w-50. The best I could find was gtx. Can't find vr-1 in stores anymore.

Oil.

Could not find any here in the south bay.

tito911s 03-14-2017 05:41 PM

Must be regional? I called local store and they said 6-7/quart....

Mick_D 03-14-2017 05:55 PM

Not technical.

Not available in Ca. Amazon won't even ship it to a Ca. address. Local Autozone doesn't carry it anymore.

87maniac 03-14-2017 08:43 PM

It is Available in CA.
My local Autozone has it on shelves for regular price. No discount.
Fresno, CA is typically a few years behind the rest of the country :-(

Anyone else find the hoarding behavior a little bit selfish and obnoxious?

If Autozone is reducing the price to such a low level they must be trying to get it off the shelves, they're probably thrilled with the guy who picks up 60 quarts. So what if it's a little nutty?

I would imagine the only bad thing to come out of it would be selling your 911 and being stuck with so much 20W-50. I'd never want to buy too much for that reason.

I did ask a guy at Chevron (I think) what the shelf life is of an unopened quart of oil. He said five or six years is fine. Sixty quarts would be good for about six years at a once a year oil change.

I went to three stores and picked up zero, six, and seven quarts. A little odd that the shelves still read $6.69/quart, and the employees had no idea that it was so cheap. At both places, they tried to scan the bottles about three times, figuring something was wrong when the price came up.

Do you realize you posted the same thing when AutoZone did this sale two years ago? SmileWavy:D

Yes, and funny, too.

"Anyone else find the hoarding behavior a little bit selfish and obnoxious?"

Are you serious? If so, go to your safe place and hug your teddy bear and you will feel better.

Hardly. Next time you need racing oil, I hope every store within an hour of you is sold out. Then you'll get what dickish behavior that is. 60 quarts. Borders on mental illness.

I don't see any Valvoline VR1 20-50 on the web site, they must be purging it from the stores that have it?? I will be on the hunt of it after work :)

my thoughts and experience

My buddy (fellow 1989 911 owner) and me decided to combine our dickish hoarding tendencies and work together - as we both had parents who used coupons and shopped sales, the natural hoarding impulse was instilled years ago.

So we now have enough VR1 for 2 oil changes each!

Autozone told me that they priced it @ $1 to quickly close it out and clear space in the store. This seems silly, I think they are to blame and next time I need oil I will have shafted myself and my buddy. Or did he shaft me, in any case it's painful just thinking about this.

I hope the Pelican collective will be there for me with the proper lubrication when this happens.
