The two 911's are 964 based. A ton of custom fab and beautiful work. Glad to see both finished.

Looks like a great adventure and a lot of work. Congrats on finishing
|
A big congrats to Jeff Zwart, Cameron Healy, Jeff Gamroth, and Carl Van Austen for finishing 3rd and 4th in the Vintage class of the 2017 NORRA Mexican 1000 race in Baja this week. These were the first Porsche 911s to finish this toughest of rallies during the event’s 50 year history! It ran 1000 miles from Ensenada to Cabo and touched both coasts.
I was privileged to be the team photographer and videographer for the seven day trip. And what a trip it was! This was one of the most epic adventures I've been on. The visuals and stories that came out of this experience are out of this world. Everything was covered by the team and myself in stills and video. Look for a published feature article and film in the near future... Here's Gamroth in front of the two 1989 Rothsport 964 Safari cars in Loretto, Mexico: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1493589574.jpg |

I followed along on Instagram, really cool cars and event. With the meticulous builds and Rothsport's excellent reputation, I was surprised to see the cars still needed some big repairs (engine out, etc). Must have been a brutal course. Congrats to the team and drivers. Looking forward to seeing more pics and video (and the cars at Luftgekuhlt)!

If you can't drive the race, driving the "chase truck" is almost as good. When the car radio says, "bring the clutch package" the fun begins
BTW, nice spot and mounting job for the sand jacks |
Saw the red car during initial fabrication. As you would expect from the Rothsport guys a ton of unique engineering and attention to detail!

Good Evening ................. I'm finally caught up on sleep and caloric intake. Outback prime rib last night. Seafood fettuccine tonight. (Rothsport crew member/employee, #2 on Healy/Zwart Desert Flyer).
Yes, the bottomless silt and deep sand were our nemesis. The best Carl could recall, the Rothsport car was towed out 9 times. Which left us in harm's way and the car was hit by another race car 3 times. Needless to say lots of late nights and early mornings. I'm very proud that the car's completed the event and we drove every single mile of the course. Though I'd met Randy a couple times before, it was great to spend the week with him. Randy will bring you the day by day in his eloquent words and photos. |
Are those C4s or re they 2 wheel drive? If all wheel, I guess it speaks to their toughness. Woulda been a fun event to participate in.
|
Yes both tubs are 89 C4's. I pulled out the front axle assemblies on both. Jeff wanted to do it in 2wd to save weight. And there weren't any gears for the front axle to match the gears he wanted in the gearbox.
|
Jeff was working on his support vehicle by himself at his shop over Christmas when I went to drop off a couple of small harnesses to him.
Post up a few shots of that unique air cooled rig. You can see it in a few of the shots. :) |
Thanks for the kind words, Cary.
The article I write will be published in PCA Panorama with a side bar by Jeff Zwart. The stories to be told are awesome as are all the visuals. Once you see the in-car video in the short 3-4 minute film that I will create for the PCA site, you will understand the abuse that led to a loose oil hose that caused an engine replacement to be completed in a 50 mph sand storm... No failure was the result of Rothsport's efforts. This race is a vibration fest. There is a reason no 911 has ever finished this rally before - it is truly brutal on man and machine. For a maiden effort, the Rothsport team is to be congratulated for overcoming all the obstacles they encountered! Simply unbelievable effort on their part to finish and trophy!! |
Congrats you guys, that's an awesome accomplishment.
