Longhood fender attach question
I am backdating a 1985 and have new metal fenders. I am looking at the headlight buckets and there is a matching hole on the passenger's side for supporting the fender on the bracket where the horns are mounted (I will relocated the horns). On the driver's side that bracket would be where the battery box was. Were the fenders supported by bolts through the fenders into a receptacle on the top of the battery boxes, or some small bracket off the battery boxes? The PET doesn't seem to indicate it.

69 912. A battery box on each side of the car with an "L" bracket attached to the battery boxes.

Interesting - thanks for the image. That location looks too low and far back for the bottom of the headlight bucket to bolt to. Maybe it is the angle...

From memory as my 912 is not currently on hand....the L shaped brackets attached at the battery boxes attach the lower part of the fender and the front valence to the chassis. As for how many holes you have in that headlight bucket, you might want to look at your wiring harness at the headlights. Does the harness split off inside the bucket for the turn signals so you would have one hole for everything "in" and another hole for the turn signal wiring "out"? One thing is for sure, a rubber drain plug fits one of the holes in the bottom of the bucket.
I did search for images of 911 headlight buckets and see a few with the head of a bolt in the bottom of the bucket, but I don't think that was the case in the early cars which you are attempting to replicate. |

I will need to think of a way to support the fender in that area I think. It seems like there should be something there. I see what you are saying about the drain and the possible split of harness needing to route down from the bucket. I have more research to do...

I finally realized the L Bracket off the battery box is for the bumper. The is a corresponding flange on the bumper that this L bracket bolts too. I realize you said something like that in the post above...I am now seeing how it all works - now that I have my bumper. I have seen some cars with a C shaped bracket that catches both the fender and the bumper and ties them to the chassis. Example borrowed from pelican site:

That is correct, because remember, on the early cars the front valence and bumper are all one piece. As for the 4 holes in the very front of the chassis, being 2 holes on each side, they are so that you can attach the chrome bumper guards to the front bumper, after which you place plastic plugs in the holes.

I see which holes you are talking about. I don't care for the front bumper guard look. I am thinking of having plugs all holes associated with them. I may have those welded up on the bumper.
