Oil light on after a few miles driven
New here guys and new to Porsche, I have a 1974 911 with a newer rebuilt 3.0 from a 1982 911. All was done by professional Porsche service center. First off I bought car from a friend who gave me all receipts and I do trust him since my life depended on it serving with him in middle east campaign. After driving car for about 30 miles engine oil light comes on. I have not brought car in yet but I won't drive it until I find out why. Oil level good, pressure good, no leaks. When I start car I let it come up to temp before driving it. I don't depress gas until I leave. Any help would be appreciated before I bring car in.

If the gauge shows proper pressure, then the oil light switch is bad.

To confirm JW’s.........
Quote:
Detach the oil pressure switch wire from the pressure sensor and ground it while the engine is idling. Indicator light at the dashboard should come off. This test will confirm that the oil pressure switch is defective. Tony |

A note on the pressure. It depends on viscosity and temperature, but the oil pressure kind of tracks the tach. Mine is in "druck", but IIRC in PSI you get 10 PSI per thousand RPM? Is that about right guys?
So, it's low.....nervously low, at idle, but picks up as you drive. So, if you have good oil pressure at off idle RPM, (1500, 2, 3, 4K etc) and "OK, but makes me nervous low" pressure at idle, it's probably all fine.

Start it, wait until the idle stabilizes (a minute or so) and drive. Wait until it is warm before you go over about 3-4000 rpm. Other already spoke to your oil light. If your pressure is good, you are good. Listen to John Walker as your ignore his professional advice at your own risk. BTW, welcome to the forum, You will find it is the best car BBS on earth.

Apologies if this has been suggested but if the engine has a 3.0 sender is it compatible with the gauge in terms of the signal it is getting? Something makes me think they cannot work together....

hi so it is the green light on your gauge correct?if the light comes on and the oil press on right is up.Replace oil press switch on top of the engine and you will be fine. But it has to be that the little finger on right is going up....
Ivan oil pressure switch is located on the top of the engine. It is a little pain in a butt to do but doable. If you need tuto i will gladly tell you how to go about it without lowering the engine. If you end up replacing the switch,do not get any aftermarket switch type.Only an original so you do not have to do the job 2x. original switch could be red or brown ![]() oil press switch |

Thanks Pro, Thinking that might be the problem I ordered the Porsche one, a little more money but that's ok. The warning light is not all the time, intermittent
