1986 Carrera - what are sport shocks?
 

I think it's time to change the shocks on my 1986 cabriolet. The original window sticker shows that the car has "sport shock absorbers" as an option. What would that mean in terms of todays offerings?

Fronts are likely "inverted" in that the body of the shock is on the top compared to the shaft of the shock being on the top with the standard shocks. That means you have to buy inverted style fronts.
Rears *shouldn't* matter what the car came with. Best to look though, as who knows what these cars have been through over the decades. The giveaway up front is the roll pin above the ball joint bolt:

If you have Bilsteins on there already, you can have them revalved for less money then a set of off-the-shelf shocks. From what I've read, they will perform much better than stock with a modern digressive curve. The downside is that you have to talk to someone at Bilstein or Elephant or some race shop, and it can take weeks to have the work performed.

If you don't want to wait, I think you could buy a used up set and send them off to have the work done.

I've never done this myself, but it's a perpetual plan for when I replace my shocks.

My '87 has the sports shock option on the original window sticker, but has black shocks all around without any kind of branding on them. I have no record of these being replaced at any point, so I'm not sure if they're original. They seem fine considering their age if original. Any idea if the green Bilstein shocks would have been on my car from new in '87?

Do you think the originals are still on the car? or is there something when you drive it that tells you that your shocks/suspension need to be changed out?

In '86-'88 at least, Boge was standard (and they are black). I am not sure if Boge made a HD version as an option. When it was time for me address new shocks on my car ('87), I put Bilstien HD inserts in front, and special digressive valve Bilstiens in back.

Hi...Our '86 Cab also came with the 'sport shock' option...They were black Boge's front and rear.

^ Same here. My '88 has the factory sport shock option and has black Boge all around.
Model # on the front strut is 911.341.041.05 which is the sport version.

For the 3.2 Carrera, M474 was the sport shock option
they could have been either Boge or Bilstein

guess this thread is getting off track....so the question...."What would that mean in terms of today's offerings? or what is available now that is comparable to what they had on back in the day.

Bilstein b6 aka hd are the same shocks as were used from at least '73 as the sport option.
