Road trip
Hello
89 3.2. I'm planning a month long trip in my 3.2. My request is for those that have experience in what I should bring with me to keep the car going. Common fail items that could spoil the trip if not readily available to me. My 3.2 is quite reliable. This may have been discussed, pardon my repeating. Please be as extensive as you can. Thank you Gus |

Air up the spare, make sure it holds and isn't super crusty
Use the cig lighter pump, to make sure it works. Get familiar with the onboard jack. Realize how precarious it is. Bring: Voltmeter Torque wrench for the wheels, short extension and lug nut socket (I don't let anyone impact my wheels on) Small gas can Small handheld cb radio A small moving blanket to lay on on the side of the road if need be. Spare clutch cable Spare fuses The tool kit. Extra new fan belt and pipe to put over the wratchet as a breaker bar. The special tool to hold the fan pulley. Money A drink holder Extra oil quarts Rags wet wipes or soap water bottle/small ice chest with drinks. Extra spark plug, you can pull a wire and check for spark by grounding it on the engine mount without pulling a spark plug. That's the stuff I brought on my last road trip. I used the tool kit to help a friends stuck gas pedal at one point. Other potential pitfalls Heat soaked coil (old coil) Or CDI gives out after a while

I assume you mean a DME relay, which is important. I also like to bring a spare distributor cap and rotor. If you haven't replaced the flywheel sensors in a long while, I would purchase replacements and bring them.

Extra Fly wheel and crank position sensors if you have them laying around from previous drop. Not sure I would order new ones if they are relatively new.
I drove my ‘88 800 miles home in February. Needed nothing but a better glass cleaner that I picked up at a truck stop.

Spare relays - across the board - (I think the red one will do in any of the other functions)
Also, I always pack a computerized battery charger (Vector) in case the alternator takes a flyer - then you can recharge the battery in your room at night. Plus a couple of qts. of your preferred oil - if your using Brad-Penn/Penn Grade, or something similar. If you have not done so yet - install a fire extinguisher somewhere within reach in the cabin. Bring a list of the Porsche dealers in the states you'll be passing through. Bill K

I have made MANY long road trips in my 85 911. With an 89 you sure don't have to worry about a clutch cable.
Unless you really think it is likely you will be doing a repair on the road, forget the crazy tool list. I drove just under 6,000 miles up in the New England states, and into Canada, and back. I have been to California three times. Next year I will drive to Key West and his the furthest south possible to drive to from Oklahoma. I was within 30 miles of the furthest east possible and I have been to Freedom Park in Sand Diego, the furthest southwest. So as far as spares, a new fuel pump if your has not been replaced, DME relay, some spare fuses, and light bulbs, and a 18 inch long piece of string trimmer line. That is to get into the gas filler cap if the pull handle cable snaps. I carry that all the time. A can of fix a flat, and most important, a smart phone cell phone and a AAA membership, and a credit card. Enjoy the trip, and don't worry, 911s are great road trip cars.

I still think he should bring the clutch cable. He might help someone else! :-D

A great bunch of informative responses. I knew I'd get some vital ideas.
I have taken my 89 up and down the east coast and through the Appalatian's several times. Never had a problem. This time I'm going into some remote areas. Many Thanks Gus |
