So the US 83 cabs in my database have "64D" numbers. I have 3 cars between the identified case VINs I listed above. I have the engine number for one of these:
WP0EA0912DS170613 has engine 64D3723

So, according to your data, this is a Carrera case and I've narrowed my range where the cutover was done to 10 cars!

Here’s the info I found on your VIN, it is most likely the same info you would get on a “birth certificate”

Model type: 911630
Engine type/number: 930/17 63D8174
Trans type/number: 915/63 74D5248
Tyres: Goodyear
Country: C08 (Japan LHD)
Colour codes: P5 V9 YE (sales codes for body/top/interior)
-P5 Grand Prix White
-V9 Black
-YE Interior Trim: material/colour = leatherette/black, Seats: rear of backrest/surround = leather, inlay = leather, side panels = leather, Carpet: black
Options:
(the following are part of C08)
-026
-186
-187
-193
-467
-476
-576
-592
(these others are part of a trim package, I dont have the number but most likely D??)
-197
-395
-559
-566
-568
(no other options listed)

Thanks again for that info, that's awesome! I would never have found that myself. it appears to be spot on too.

As for the engine, I'm not sure if it's the correct way to check, but I checked the part number online for the case last week (dont have it with me at the moment) and it was coming up as the later case 930 was the first digits of the part number.
I know my heat exchangers have an 04/1983 date on them.

Your engine/crankcase should be the later “Carrera” style, fromwhat I remember both the SC and Carrera blocks have 930 part numbers.

Here’s a pic of the Carrera style

and the earlier style

Yep! Definitely have the side oil drain plug like on the later model that you have shown above.
Strange that they used the later model case, but used the same old nternals?

Not sure if you can read this number better than me... this is the number on the engine underneath the aircon mount. I can read that it says 930 _ _ 7? Why is there an additional engine number and what does it represent?

930/17 is the engine type.

The only difference that I’m aware of between the 930/17 (Japan) engine and the 930/16 (USA/CAN) engine is the Japanese cars have an overheat/temp sensor and warning light for the catalytic convertor

Wonder if it's a miles driven warning light like the US/Can OXY light? Bet so.

@jrbennet - I thought I read somewhere recently that the Japanese 83 cabs also had a different back seat.

There's definitely 2 sensors on the CAT. One on the top and one on the outside. The one on the outside I thought looked aftermarket as it in an odd spot close to the rear left wheel. Will see if I have a photo.
Is two sensors the norm or just one?

@mhackney I know the Japanese coupes have different seats, maybe Adrock can post a pic of his rear seat to show what he has

Here’s a pic of a mid ‘80s Carrera/coupe from Japan.

My rear seats are actually out of the car at the moment.
Well the seats are there but the backs are out. I dont think they will be going in anytime in the near future. Any idea how they are different? I haven't noticed anything remarkably different when looking at them outside of the car.
No idea how anybody sits in the back seats of these cars... mine's a cab and my head pushes into the roof and I'm not even tall; about 175cm

Thanks for the pic Adrock
As far as I know, Japan is the only version with the full/1 piece rear seat bottom.
Everywhere else just has two small cushions surrounded by carpet.

My 83 SC Coupe from Japan has identical options, except no 566 front fog lights the last 4 of the VIN are 9606, engine number 63D8109 M930/17.

I'm trying to find out what the original base radio would have been on the Japan '83 SC?

Thanks,

Joseph
