Checking Interest/Price CK for my 73 RSR Project
Not for sale at this this but I would appreciate feedback on my 73 RSR project. I have owned this 73 911 since 2000. The PO is a friend who bought it in the early 90’s. It was a 73.5 T Sporto in Sephia Brown, 90k miles. He sold the engine and trans and started an RSR conversion. He was a body man so the first pic is on a rotisserie applying GP White, he then put in a full cage. The chassis a Southern car, rust and wreck free. I added the rear TA reinforcements as I was planning to race it. Life got busy so no time for the car but I began to accumulate parts for it. The engine is a 95 with 50K, I verified the 2-3% leak down (I bought in ’10 from a Pelican), I removed/sold the stock injection. The 915 has 2500 miles (it was in my 72 for a while) and had a rebuild by Billy Mitchell at Eurasian.
Sadly I don’t think I will have the time/energy to complete it. I totaled the part and it comes to $58K. I thinking 45K plus? If I sell the project all parts will be organized in numbered boxes with correlating excel. I am not desperate or time limited so no low ball offers, I am just looking for feedback on what the project is worth. Car is in storage so pics are limited. Note! None of these parts are for sale at this time. My 2 cents: With the cage and the cut-up quarters - this is a stalled race car project. Taking it back to stock is really not an option. Stalled race car projects typically sell at a pretty steep discount. The most valuable thing is the 3.6, but it has been sitting a long time and still needs an adapter for the 915. I think it will be tough to get 45K. Your best strategy is probably selling the parts separately (ugh). Not trying to be a downer as I am in the same place with a '72, but without a 3.6 engine. :(

Sad to say this but you'd probably do better by parting it out - imagine you won't want to do that as it's a PITA. Projects of this scale are usually too expensive for people that want to tackle them. If they do, my experience says they want to spread the project cost out over time - gather up parts little by little as the build goes on. They start with an affordable shell/roller, then find an engine, gather suspension......just my 2cents.

Have to say I agree (sorry) |
Part it out. You will be able to get way more $ in parts.

Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback. I was thinking the same thing, $45K is lot for a project but I was hoping to get it all sold at once.
I would only part out if I sold the chassis first. I would think it would be of interest since it is a 73 and is a straight/rust free real long hood, and not a back date. Also for the Cal. guy no pollution concern. So how much for the roller, doors, window frames, etc, no brakes but RSR struts, fuel cell and front bumper/duck? I can add/subtract parts as they want. $19K? |
I was almost there myself about 9 months ago. My project had stalled for 7 years as life got in the way. I toyed with the same $45K number but I had a complete '86 car with complete cage, complete coilover suspension and serious brakes to make up a nice roller. Also had a good 3.6 on my engine stand with all the parts to rebuild it. And a fresh 915 gearbox with Guard diff, all new bearings and synchros, plus Wevo trans cooler. But I came to the conclusion that A) I'd never get anywhere near that kind of $$ in parts and B) I was too close to finishing it to give up. Now I have a complete car, new paint, fresh warmed over engine, fresh trans, new Perlon carpet etc and couldn't be happier with my decision to keep moving forward. FWIW, if someone were to offer me the same $45K today I don't think I'd sell.
