Question looking to buy some heads

Hi everyone,

It has been ages since I was last on this forum, hope everyone is doing well.

I'm after some 911 heads (and possibly cylinders and pistons) for a project of mine. I'm currently doing up a VW for race and occasional road use, I've seen a couple of people put 911 heads on their VW motors and thought I might give it a shot.
If anyone has a cheap set of heads (only really need 4, but I doubt most people would want to split a set) they're willing to part with I would definately be interested. I'm not sure what type of heads I need, but I was thinking some 930 items might work since I'm going with a turbo set-up on the car. However if anyone has any better suggestions I'm all ears

Thanks guys,
Cam

Cam,
what's the head stud spacing on a vw motor? Porsche changed the spacing from 80mm in 1978 to 86mm. They aren't interchangable. I have no idea about VW cylinders but I your choices in porsche cylinders would be 80,81,84,85,90,92 in the 80mm stud spacing and 95,98,100 in the 86mm stud spacing. Looking at the numbers 84mm pistons would make ~1.55L motor, 90mm, 1.8L, 95mm pistons a 2.0L motor and 100mm pistons would make a 2.3L motor

Just some food for thought. Also how would you run your valves? 911 motors are overhead camed while I belive you use pushrods.

I have some 2.2 heads in rebildable condition. $60 for all six. However, I think shipping to you might cost a bit...

Hi Tim,

The most common way I've seen the conversion done is running another plate either side of the crankcase, attaching this to the "thru bolts" and then having the plate tapped to accomodate Porsche head studs. From there everyone "re-pins" the OHC's to operate the valves correctly and aside from heaps of fiddling the conversion is pretty much done.

The capacity all really depends on which case and/or crank set-up you use. Type IV (914) cases offer around the two and a half litre capacity quite easily as do the oxyboxer (wasserboxer with the water jackets remover) motors, which is what I will be running.

I will find some links and post them for you, I really enjoy talking tech with people and perhaps even taking the conversion to another level.

Cheers,
Cam

Techweenie; I have sent you a PM. Thanks.

That's pretty impressive and I'll bet it stands up to the heat alot better than normal VW heads.

wow that guy has done some really cool stuff with that Type IV engine. I'd like to see how he did the actual cams. I bet he cut a pair of 911 cams to work, but did he change the firing order or use 1,2,3,4 sequence like the outlaw 911 4's do. That cam drive system looks to be the most interesting part. very cool.

Yeah, type IV heads are notorious for getting insanely hot, plus I think 911 heads are a far better investment than aftermarket items.

Clint, he actually "re-pinned" the cams to run with the VW motor. What this entails I'm not exactly sure but I'm planning to do the same thing with my motor.

I also have a .pdf file with a type 1 motor that has been converted to use 911 heads. If anyone is interested in checking it out feel free to e-mail me.
