What exactly is a travel kit? A big case and nothing else?

Jared, it has been quite a few years since I last saw one of these kits but I will try to answer your question the best I can. It comes with a folding plastic storage case that latches together with a leather strap. Contents include a clutch cable, a partial carb gasket set, a valve cover gasket, one valve rocker arm, a pair of inner/outer valve springs, valve stem keeper, one valve rocker arm shaft, one spark plug and a few misc. gaskets and seals, one alternator V belt, and one of the special spark plug connectors. The Porsche factories reasoning behind the design of the kits was to store the kit in your cars trunk, and then if you had a minor breakdown somewhere while away from home, you could or might have the right parts needed to fix the problem. Of course you will also need quite a few tools but then that is another factory kit. I'm sure if you call BIll, he would unpackage one of the kits and give you more details on contents. The contests, expecially the gaskets varied depending on the exact type of engine you had. If you are into Concourse shows, it is a neat accessary to show with your car. Few people had them and many Porsche owners have never seen or heard of them. I have one for my 914/6 many years ago and used it once. I bought it from Bill. Thanks for asking.

Jared,
I looked up the actual contents of a 1970 Travel Kit using the PET program. If you have this program, it can be found in Section 0 under "Spare Parts Bay" (rather than spare parts bag.) Here goes:
Spare parts bag (1), fuse assortment (1), ignition points (1), spark plug (3), set of valve springs, conical piece divided (valve keeper), seal-valve stem (1), adjusting screw for valve (2), valve adjusting nut (2), drain plug (1), sealing ring for drain plug (1), gasket for oil strainer (2), spark plug socket with rubber cap (2). Regarding the size of this kit, its not all that big, similar in size and shape to a factory tool kit.

I don't know if these are still available new.

That sounds really cool. Unfortunatley i have an SC, so most of the parts would not be needed.
